DAY 26 – DOG-A-DAY – MEET “ZIGGY” THE HAPPY HAVANESE

I had to look up HAVANESE

when I painted JINGLES! and now I have painted two!!!

MEET MR. ZIGGY

How to describe ZIGGY?

“His two favorite things are human food and cuddling with us.
He has a doggie sister who he adores named Roxy.
He loves being outdoors and we frequently go on hikes.
My 17 year old son Trent has been Ziggys constant companion since we adopted him. I have so
many pictures of the two of them and  they still are best friends to this day.
He is the sweetest, cuddliest doggy. I sleep with him every night and I can’t imagine not having him
next to me.”

The story of Ziggy is really touched my heart and I am honored to have painted him.

Ziggy  has cancer and every moment shared is precious.

Dogs do not live NEARLY long enough. Not even close. And sometimes I even wonder if THAT fact is yet another one of the many many lessons DOGS have to teach us. They do not waste ANY time. They have boiled their live down to JUST WHAT MATTERS –  to all the good – eating, sleeping and loving. The rest…they have no time for … but still, I wish they lived so much longer.

I hope Ziggy has all good days…xo

DAY 25 – DOG-A-DAY – MEET “BELLE” THE SHICHON

MANY COUPLES

HAVE FOUR LEGGED “FIRST BABIES”

MEET “BELLE”… “The First baby”

“We got Belle 8 years ago this month and she was our first baby 🙂 We went to a breeder who was local to us “just to look” and as soon as we laid eyes on her we were in love. She came home with us that day. We thought she was the sweetest little bundle of fur, so we gave her a “princess” name – Belle. As she grew, we realized she definitely was all things sweet, but she was also all things sassy 🙂 She can be impossibly stubborn but she is also incredibly loyal. Our two girls love Belle to pieces and she loves them back (although sometimes she does hide under the couch to escape them, haha!). She’s also known to be a bit of an escape artist, so our neighbors have gotten to know her too (oops). She’s an adventurer, and explorer, and she wants to be everyone’s friend. We love her so much

“Our family will be making an overseas move to the Philippines for missions work in the next year, and the saddest part is that Belle won’t be able to come with us. It breaks our hearts, but we are determined to find her the kindest, most loving home we can before we must leave. We have wanted to get a portrait done of her so we can always remember how much joy she brought to our little family.”

BELLE AND THE BABY (NOW 5 1/2 YEARS)

I am so happy to have been able to paint this portrait of Belle”.

BELLE ON THE SOFA. Bean loves to sleep on the top of the cushions like this!!!! Love the blanket!!! Also like our house!

BELLE is a very special dog who is loved very much. I can’t imagine how hard it will be for the family to leave her behind and I hope she finds a new home and continues to get lots of loving snuggles.

5 FUN FACTS ABOUT SHICHON

1.If you are looking for a “teddy bear” dog, the Bichon Frise Shih Tzu mix, also called a Shichon or Zuchon, may be just the one for you.

2. Because of the very nature of a mixed breed — diseases prone to afflict the pure breed pass mixed breeds by — your Shichon will usually enjoy robust health.

3. The Shichon is the type of dog that will follow you around the house from room to room.

4. Fractures are definitely a possibility when dropped even from a low height onto a hard floor. Be careful with the little ones!

5. The Bichon Frise Shih Tzu cross is getting to be increasingly popular. And, with good reason. It is a relatively low maintenance dog which is an ideal companion for somebody living alone.

3 MORE DOGS!! WOW WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO SPEND A MONTH!!!

When I look back over these photos, I can remember each dog…each face and each story. I still want to make it to 100 some day…and perhaps what I might do is continue to post pics and stories…on Instagram!!

Funny, I also can remember what music I was listening to while I painted each dog .. or TV show I was binge watching while I painted… Lets see, WHILE I PAINTED In February I watched

“MOZART IN THE JUNGLE”

one of my faves!! and

all 7 seasons of “THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW”.

HAVE A GREAT SATURDAY!

DOG-A-DAY 24 – MEET “JINGLES”

When I first saw the photo of JINGLES ,

I asked “Is this a Dog or a stuffed animal?”

He is the cutest little guy!!!!

MEET JINGLES THE HAVANESE

“Jingles is my shadow. Whenever I am, he is. And when I’m not home, he is bugging the family to let him outside so he can sit and the driveway and wait for my return. Even in the rain.

By nature, the Havanese breed is very loving and Jingles enjoys the constant cuddle. He has formed eastie-Westie feet. Or as my daughter used to say when she was younger and taking ballet “Look mommy, he’s in the first position!” They are often the first thing many comment on.

He is know for sleeping in our bed (which breaks the kids hearts), smack in the middle usually leaving us with little to no space. Thank goodness he’s a small dog!

We often say he is the soul of someone in our former lives. We just haven’t figured out who!”

FIVE FUN FACTS ABOUT THE HAVANESE BREED

  1. The Havanese is a breed of dog of the Bichon type, which do not shed.
  2. hese dogs were developed from the now extinct Bichon Tenerife, which was introduced to the Canary Islands by the Spanish and later to other islands and colonies of Spain by sailors.
  3. Bred as a companion dog to the Cuban aristocracy in the 1800s, he’s earned the nickname “Velcro dog” because he sticks so closely to his owner’s side. A lot like the Vizsla!
  4. But don’t write him off as just a lapdog; the Havanese is trainable and surprisingly energetic, and has excelled in dog sports and canine careers ranging from circus performer to assisting the handicapped.
  5. They love to be on furniture, and they are smaller-sized dogs bred to be companions.

CH-CH-Changes……

The Dog-A-Day project has been wonderful . I have loved meeting you, and your dogs. And I have loved painting each beautiful animal. Unfortunately I will not be able to continue with 100 dogs and 100 days. Someday, I hope to pick up where I left off but, in the meantime I will accept commissions of the 10″ x 10″ size painting through March 5. Visit LesliDeVito.com

I will post dogs through Tuesday and then sporadically as I finish the orders I have gotten..at a NON Dog-a-day pace. I will get back to Design posts and color posts and the business of leaving my house which I have done little of for the month.

Thanks for understanding and thanks for sharing your dogs with me.

GO HERE TO PLACE ORDERS.

Please do not hesitate to ask any questions.

REMEMBER MARCH 5 WILL BE THE DEADLINE And AFTER THAT…I will no longer be taking commissions of any size.

DAY 23 – DOG-A-DAY – MEET “SUMO”

TALK ABOUT A LOT OF DOG IN ONE TINY PACKAGE!!

THIS LITTLE GUY IS IN DOG HEAVEN BUT LEFT QUITE AN IMPACT ON EARTH.

MEET “SUMO”

SUMO

“Sumo was a fearless adventurer and a character much larger than his pint-sized body. For the last five of his 13 years he lived and traveled in an RV with me and my husband. His favorite thing to do was anything we were doing. We took him on countless bike rides in his trailer, his backpack, a basket, and even a small cooler. He took river trips in canoes, kayaks, tubes and paddleboards donning his tiny life vest. He even took to the air joining us on several flights. Sumo made everyone smile and challenged all the small dog stereotypes. Sumo probably lived more in his short 13 years than most humans do in their lifetime.

Sumo was blind and very much like Mr. Magoo, ending up in precarious locations and situations
completely oblivious. He was really curious and relied on his sense of smell for so much. If we took
our eyes off of him for a few seconds he was off somewhere smelling and getting into something he
didn’t need to. We lovingly came to refer to this as “magoo-ing around.” If he wasn’t in my lap and
you didn’t see him at your feet, he was off magoo-ing around somewhere.
He may have been a small dog, but he has left a huge hole in our hearts!

SUMO YOU ARE MISSED DEARLY.

DAY 22 – DOG-A-DAY – MEET “MAGGIE”

TO TELL YOU THERE TRUTH,

I ACTUALLY CANNOT BELIEVE THAT IT TOOK ME 22 DAYS TO PAINT

A GOLDEN RETRIEVER.

I WOULD SAY, 20% OF THE PET PORTRAITS I HAVE PAINTED HAVE BEEN GOLDENS….

and HERE IS A BEAUTY

HER NAME IS “MAGGIE”

“She is everyones love, but especially Joe (her Dad). She loves to play ball and will play non stop for hours which is perfect for Joe. She has a bit of OCD in her in that she will never let go of her toys and truly will stare down the toy chest until she gets to play. She sleeps on Joe’s pillow every night and at times we thinks she thinks she is a cat being that she grew up with 2!! She sits herself on the back cushions of out sofa…yes she is one spoiled pup!!!”

My Dad had Golden’s…and they were just the sweetest, smartest, furriest loving dogs. They seem to have been put on Earth to make sure we don’T MESS things up….because they keep a close eye on us as if to say…”I got ya covered…now throw that ball!”

5 FUN FACTS ABOUT THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER

1.The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S.

2. Golden Retrievers excel at retrieving game for hunters, tracking, sniffing out drugs, and as therapy and assistance dogs.

3. They’re also natural athletes, and do well in dog sports such as agility and competitive obedience.

4. They are ridiculously CUTE PUPPIES!!!

MAGGIE IS ALL READ FOR A “TAIL”GATE PARTY!!! – GET IT! “TAIL-GATE!

5. The breed’s friendly, tolerant attitude makes him a fabulous family pet, and his intelligence makes him a highly capable working dog.

I am excited to announce some changes to the “100 dogs in 100 days” project….

Due to overwhelming response … I AM still taking submissions but I am adding a feature whereby you can guarantee a spot by “PRE-Purchasing” your Painting!You can go here

In addition, I do not think this will affect you but ….just in case – my email was hacked and thus if you, for some reason get an email from me which has an attachment that you are instructed to open DO NOT OPEN IT. DAY 20 – DOG-A-DAY – MEET “LOLA”

HAPPY MONDAY!

I AM HAPPY TO SHARE WITH YOU

“LOLA”

Isn’t Lola Beautiful!

Every once in a while I don’t have very much information on a dog and in those cases I like to use my imagination to paint a picture in my mind of their personality and who they might be.

The first thing I was struck by when I saw her photo was her smile. She exudes happiness…and relaxation, like a dog who is loved dearly and who LOVES with her whole self. She is a medium sized dog but my guess is that she sometimes forgets her size and tries to curl up like a puppy next to the ones she loves.I bet she likes to run and fetch and I imagine she can go very fast if she wants to. I bet she loves the beach!

I am grateful to her owner for sharing her with me..so that I could share her with you!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I cannot wait to share the dogs I have lined up this week!
DAY 19 – DOG-A-DAY – MEET “PAOLO”
Thank you to Holly at The English Room for the Post about the 100 dogs in 100 days!
NOW – GET READY TO MEET
A ONE OF A KIND GENTLEMAN
“PAOLO”
“Paolo is an unbelievable pup! He looks you in the eye and says “what’s the plan for the day?” He loves people and greets everyone when they come to the door or into the yard. If you rub his ears you have a friend for life. He is extremely fast and strong. He loves to go running, mountain biking and hiking. He loves being outside (unless it is too cold in which case he looks at you through the window and shivers) You know he is excited when he chatters his teeth and jumps 5 feet straight up with front paws dancing. He is constantly checking in with you to make sure all is good before he lays down or tries to sneak up on the couch. He is a true companion who loves his family and friends unconditionally.”
WHAT IS A “BRACCO ITALIANO”
FIRST OF ALL..THEY ARE ONE OF THE CUTEST PUPPIES KNOWN TO MAN!
BABY PAOLO WHEN HE WAS STILL NAMED “GALILEO”…OM MY GOSH LOOK AT THAT FACE!
5 FUN FACTS ABOUT THE BRACCO ITALIANO
  1. The Bracco Italiano is and upland bird dog and is a rare breed in the US but is becoming more popular because they are an amazing hunting dog but also just as amazing and loyal family dog.
  2. With his long ears, droopy lips, and soulful expression, the Bracco Italiano has a distinctive look. He’s believed to be an ancient breed, dating back to the fourth or fifth century B.C
  3. Train this intelligent dog with gentleness and consistency and he’ll always aim to please, but sharp corrections will cause him to stop trying.
  4. The Bracco’s short, dense, shiny coat can be white; white with orange or dark amber markings; white with chestnut markings; white with speckled pale orange markings; or white with roan-chestnut markings.
  5. The Bracco is also the only air-scenting hunting breed, although he may also trail game.  It is very important for trainers to recognize that his way is different than most bird dogs – in the experienced dog’s initial gallop across a field, he may not seem to take the time to be checking for birds, but the truth is, with a couple of back-and-forths, he’s already checked out the field.  If birds are there, he’ll let you know. SO COOL!
PAOLO
Make sure to visit The English Room!
DAY 18 – DOG – A DAY – MEET “FOSTER”
FOSTER THE AUSSIE!
IS A MINIATURE AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD
“We got FOSTER from a breeder at 6 months. The family that was going to take him in changed their minds, so he was the only puppy they had. I think it was meant to be!”
“When we arrived at their lake house he came running down the driveway from the back of the house and greeted us. We instantly knew we couldn’t go home without him. We named him Foster because Fosters beer has the slogan “Australian for beer” and he is a miniature Australian Shepherd. 🙂 He has an insane obsession with balls! He carries one around with him constantly and basically only let’s it out of his mouth to eat! “
5 FUN FACTS ABOUT MINIATURE AUSTRAILIAN SHEPHERD
1.Exceptional agility combined with strength and stamina allows for working over a variety of terrain.
2.The double coat of medium length and coarseness may be solid in color or merled, with or without white and/or tan (copper) markings. He traditionally has a docked or natural bobtail.
SWEET LITTLE FOSTER
3. They can become nervous and destructive if left alone too much without enough mental and physical exercise. They need a job to do, as the breed is very intelligent, active and thus easily bored.
4. The gene for the beautiful merle coloration also carries a blind/deaf factor. Be sure to check the hearing on merle puppies.
5. A breeding program to develop the Miniature Australian Shepherd (North American Miniature Australian Shepherd) was begun in 1968 using small Australian Shepherds. Breeders bred them down in size to produce a smaller dog and today continue to strive to produce a mirror image of the Australian Shepherd in a size that fits well into today’s lifestyle, without sacrificing instinct, ability or character.
Day 17 – DOG-A-DAY – MEET “SADIE”
TGIF everybody!!! I am super excited because in just a few hours I am going to hit the road and go see my baby girl for the night. I am picking her up at her dorm, taking her on a Target run, getting a manicure. And seeing a movie at the place where they bring you dinner !!!! I will be there less that 24 hours but it will be all Phoebe and me and I am so EXCITED!!!
i am also thrilled to introduce you to:
SADIE
SWEET SADIE IS A
GERMAN WIRE HAIRED POINTER
“Sadie is a 3 year old German Wire Haired Pointer, whom we adopted when we were living in Wilmington, North Carolina. She was bred to be a show dog, but because she was smaller than desired, she was unwanted. We had a serendipitous meeting when we happened to visit a dog show, and a few weeks later, she came home with us. Having lived in a kennel for the first year and a half of her life, it took her several weeks to come out of the corner, and a few months before she was comfortable letting us pet her. Today, she is the sweetest, most loving, and loyal dog you can imagine. She charms everyone with her beautiful eyes, but still takes a while to warm up to strangers. She spends her days lounging on our temperpedic mattress with her head on a pillow, and relishes her evening walks or visits to the dog park. She’s come a long way since her days in the dog kennel, but we are the ones whose lives truly have been enriched!”
5 FUN FACTS ABOUT GERMAN WIRE HAIRED POINTERS!
BEAUTIFUL SADIE
1.The German Wirehaired Pointer was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to be a versatile hunting dog breed, a job at which he still excels today. He can hunt any game on any terrain and point and retrieve from land or water.
2. A facial beard gives him a distinctive expression, and a docked tail held horizontally quivers with excitement. Known as the Drahthaar in his homeland of Germany, the breed was developed to be an all around hunting companion, useful for hunting all types of game in all conditions.
3. Training him to compete in obedience, tracking, agility, rally, or other dog sports gives him a job, mental stimulation, and exercise.
THANKS SADIE!
4. Can be suspicious of strangers and aloof with all but his family
5.German hunters in search of a rugged dog who could hunt any kind of game on any terrain created the German Wirehaired Pointer in the late 1800s. In him they blended the best qualities of the PointerPoodle, and Foxhound to develop an all-purpose dog who could point and retrieve on land and in water, no matter what the weather or environment.
thanks for sharing Sadie with us!!! Stay tuned to see who drops in tomorrow.
Beginning March 1 – the Dog A Day will be presented daily on its OWN PAGE!!! The blog will go back to home and design posts and each day a new dog will be introduced on the special page!!!
