One of the first things anyone will tell you to do when readying your house to be put on the market is to
“GET RID OF STUFF” !!!
IT IS AMAZING HOW MUCH CRAP YOU CAN ACCUMULATE!

My Old Country House
Raising kids. Going places. Doing things. Collecting things. We are not big collectors but we do have some stuff and then – Multiply that times 5 people – well 3 now living here…but the college kids left their stuff!!!. It becomes overwhelming.
Last year, when we readied our house to go on the market (we will call that “round 1”), we PURGED…we PURGED and we Purged BIG! We got a storage unit to put the stuff that we either could not part with BUT could live without in the short term…or wanted to save for the kids..etc etc. we took DOZENS upon DOZENS of bags to Goodwill and our local thrift store. We gave things away on the curb. It felt great, lightening the load, thinning the stuff.
Enter ROUND 2 – and believe it or not, we were able to PURGE EVEN MORE STUFF. This time we removed a number of large pieces of furniture. A designer friend of mine is doing a show house and I provided her with a number of ITEMS plus I am now consigning some large pieces that I know we won’t move to a new house. Little by little I literally felt the house get lighter!!!! and here is the BONUS part – when you have less stuff – your house looks less messy…even when things are not “perfect”.
I went around yesterday and snapped photos of the house…with her all buffed up, ready for the market…I was amazed at how much cleaner and BIGGER it feels!
WHY IS IT THAT WHEN YOU GET YOUR HOUSE ALL READY TO SELL…YOU WANT TO STAY?
LET THIS WILD RUMPUS BEGIN!!!

I feel your pain, Lesli. Our house is also on the market. We did an ENORMoUS purge to get it ready, and it does feel great. We are downsizing by at least a third, so it’s easy to make decisions about what stays/goes. I gave away tons of stuff that would have to be landfilled, just by advertising it as FREE. Apparently that word is irresistible to most people .
