Recently I was giving color advice to a young friend…

…..she and her boyfriend have just purchased their first  home and are nesting.

She showed me her LIVING ROOM color…a beautiful Benjamin Moore color called..

Unfamiliar territory…so far……IN MY OWN HOME  I have not used many “earth tones” …I have steered clear of them as they seem to have been used too often unimaginatively and without color….but NO LONGER is that the case….NOW  I  confess that am quite smitten with THEM…especially when they are  balanced with LOTS of white ……touches of black …… hints of gold ….. subtle contrasts and pops of surprising colors like sky blue,  pink and red….ummmmmm…I tell ya…love it!

So gorgeous in it’s simplicity…it is not a color that I would want to do all over the place…I am afraid things would get muddy and dark…but I love it…the way I love grasscloth…in just the right amounts…so rich and beautiful .

  1. So glad to hear you are feeling better.

As for the beige, not a fan. They don’t call it ‘builder’s beige’ for nothing. I thought beige was everywhere just a few years ago and that is what everyone is still trying to get away from with the lovely greys and blues and every other colour but beige. But I have never been a fan to be honest. Even when earth tones were EVERYWHERE in the 80’s and 90’s (I still shudder at all those ‘contemporary’ homewares stores that were a sea of beige/brown/camel – add in the boxy dark wood and black furniture and I really cringe). It just looks brown to me and I really, really don’t like brown. But, as with anything, everything goes in cycles. It is bound to come back in some way because people always want to go against the flow and there are those talented people like yourself who can make anything look good given the right balance. Heck, I have never been a fan of gold tones either and a few brass animals are now sprinkled around so you can never say never!

    1. I honestly have NEVER been attracted to beige of any kind…any where…until now…and I have truly surprised my own self!!! But I do think it is a matter of restraint and using it more like a color than a neutral ….thanks for the virtual hug!

  2. I’m partial to Pale Almond by Benjamin Moore. I’ve used it in my own home in multiple rooms and have not tired of it completely. There are some rooms where I am looking to add a bit more white, but the Pale Almond looks great with White Dove by Benjamin Moore too.

  3. I think the touch of camel color will certainly add more beauty to the walls and your rooms. It looks simple, yet attention-grabbing. All the inspirations are just impeccable. And Amanda’s dog worth mentioning too. He is so loveable.

  4. We have camel to caramel colors in our office, entry hall, upstairs hall, & master & guest bedroom. Some of them are warmer, and the bedrooms are cooler & very calm & relaxing. We had the master color in our last house & repeated it here because we love it so much.

  5. When I first got married, our first house was in a brand new subdivision and everyone had builders beige interiors with beige tiles, counters, carpet, etc. After a year of living there, I couldn’t stand the color, so I went out and started repainting everything! My current house was painted pinky-beige (with matching tiles) and had to repaint all of that! Although you posted some beautiful pictures of beige, I don’t think I can go back to it! I like embracing color too much!

P.S.. Glad to see you back!!! 🙂

  6. Lesli— Our family room is painted in a shade close to peanut butter. It is the center “hub” of our very open floor plan, and from this room I can see all the other rooms on our first floor, each painted in a different color. I love all the colors we chose because they all complement each other and having the hub in the center be so neutral makes it all work! The foyer, living room, dining room and kitchen are each painted in a color, but each one works with the one next to it, and with the peanut butter. (High ceilings, dark hardwood floors and lots of linen white trim helps as well.) And I love that my dog’s hair doesn’t show hardly at all… 😉

  7. I also wonder if bright white will take a back seat to cream eventually? I love cream and have it all over my house – obviously I’m not a blogger though as I don’t think it shows up so nicely on a computer screen : )

Thank you for visiting My Old Country House...I’d love to hear what you thinking. Let me know in the comments. And Have a great Day!
