STONE!!!

I CHALLENGE YOU TO NAME  a color which does not look great with STONE – Navy, Pink, Red, Green, Gold, White – and if you are so inclined – you can layer neutrals – I predict that STONE will be the new GRAY – warmer, a bit deeper and still a beautiful color that works well with others!!!!

THE DINING ROOM / STUDIO

ONE CRITERIA for wherever we move is that I have an ART studio. But for now, I work in what was once and still sometimes serves as our DINING ROOM. This requires a fair amount of organization on my part.

THE DINING ROOM

THE DINING ROOM

When we purged to prepare the house to be put on the market, I ditched or packed away most of my linens. There are just 3 of us here now, (sniff sniff) so linens feel a bit elaborate most of the time.

The dining room table was painted (kind of a dumb move on my part) BUT this Spring I embarked in the arduous task of stripping and refinishing it. It was worth the time and effort – I love how it looks now.

A few years ago, I was shopping in Crate and Barrel and stumbled upon the LYLE dining chairs .  I   sent a TWEET to designer Mary McDonald asking her if she liked them. And she answered me!!!! She gave them a BIG thumbs up!!! I LOVE them. They are the real deal, and yes, a bit pricier than many you can find online now BUT …. The seats of most of the imitators are quite small 14″ x 14″ whereas the LYLE chair (19″ x 23″) are MUCH roomer for adult bums! The Lyle Chairs  are also incredibly sturdy…and do not tip easily – important with kids!

  • A while back I invested in hanging hardware ( WALKER DISPLAY) which works by hooking over our picture rail. It was a GREAT investment! NOT hammering nails  protects the walls and helps me store and hang multiple pieces of ART  (STRAIGHT) which are at various stages of completion.

leslihouse0104 NOW – THE ROOM FEELS SO SPARSE WITH ALL OF THE ART AT LEFTOVER LUXURIES – Seeing my pastel colored paintings on the charcoal gray wall (WOW) has got me pondering painting one wall of my DREAM studio with a dark color…I love how they POP!!!!

Life is a work in Progress and I love the way people are designing their homes to reflect more modern families. Sadly the Dining room is unfortunately a casualty of this change. Many homes have opted to meld the dining room into a multi-used space. In Our new home, IF we BUILD which is my current HOPE , will not have a dining room but instead a large kitchen with an HUGE table!

i LOVE this room!

AN UPDATE ON THE SALE OF THE HOUSE

FIRST I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU! To everyone who left such sweet messages. I cannot tell you how much they helped. The bruises are fading and the chiropractor has worked his magic. I will be back to climbing ladders in no time…but NEVER EVER again will I leave the night-light off…never. Thank you.

Many of you have asked about the sale of the house so I thought I would give you an update.

LesliHouse0025

It has been busy beans around here! Our realtor warned us that the summer would be quiet..and quiet IT WAS. Silent in fact. But with all 3 kids home, travel and pet sitters, it was really okay to enjoy one more summer in our big old house.

LesliHouse0015

Before we knew it…summer was behind us….and Cooper started 10th grade. Tate moved into his Apartment and has started his 2nd year at UVA. Phoebe moved into her dorm at William and Mary and is in her bliss. She is surrounded by history and intellect and college fun; making great new friends, singing in an Acapella group and after only two weeks…is feeling very much at home in her 12 x 16 shared dorm room…

But,  just as our realtor told us…it would pick up in late August and has gone gangbusters ever since. We have had a showing almost every other day…and I am hoping and praying that the perfect people will find their prefect dream home here soon. Fingers (and toes and eyes crossed!)

AUTUMN is my favorite time in Virginia.

Yes, Spring is beautiful but the Fall is beyond comparison, the leaves are changing and the crisp, cool fresh mountain air greets me each morning and follows me throughout my day…We have the UVA football games and Friday Night Lights at he High School.

It may be time for us to move to a different home,  but I hope to always live in this beautiful piece of Heaven.

FALLING DOWN THE STAIRS

So, the other night , I got up to use the restroom. I was sleeping in Phoebe’s room, keeping her poor lost kitty, “Gus” company.

The hallway was pitch black, I could not see my hand in front of my face. And I remember thinking, “No problem, after 12 years – I can do this blindfolded, I know this house LIKE the back of my hand!!!”.

I came out of the bathroom, and went to walk back down the hall to Phoebe’s room , I stepped…and my left foot went into open air..

“Phew I thought…that’s the staircase…go a few feet more…”,
…so with my right foot I took a confident stride, further forward, down the hall … but instead, I went …
into nothingness!!! Into the blackness….AND FELL.

I fell forward, down and kept trying to grab a rail, the stair, something but I could see nothing and nothing met my hand…flailing , I just kept going down. I tumbled down the stairs, like out of a movie, in slow motion and just when I thought I had gotten to the bottom of the 18 steps …. I flipped backwards…over the rail and down onto the floor below…flat on my back.

For a moment…I was stunned – the wind had been knocked out of me, I could not breathe…but in seconds I screamed and sobbed – “HELP!!! help! Damon! HELP!!!” I was afraid to move and I was not sure I could move if I tried. The room was spinning and my arms really hurt. And then I started shaking, SO hard it was almost like a convulsion but I was not cold.
Damon and Cooper ran down. It was established that I was alive. I could move my limbs…But my neck and my back hurt very bad and 911 was called and the rest is a long story that includes an ambulance ride and ends with good news, my spine is intact, I have no lasting head injury, just a big lump on the back of my head and the 50 odd deep dark bruises that keep popping up and filling in gaps in the story and which will all eventually fade. I hurt all over – I feel like I fell down a flight of stairs…cause I did. But I will be okay.

I am so very grateful to be alive. I am grateful for my husband and my son. My children at college. For Charlie the dog who would not leave my side. For the sweet recent JMU nursing school graduate named Emily who held my hand in the ambulance and put my hair back into a ponytail and kept me distracted with conversation. For the Martha Jefferson ER staff that were each brilliant, gentle, sweet humans. And the X-ray tech who helped me take off my necklace. And kept saying “I’m sorry if I hurt you.”
It was surreal. It happened in an instant.

Leave the night-light on. Always make sure you tell the people you love – that you love them. Even if you fancy yourself “not the mushy type” – figure that part out. Life can change on a dime.

XO
