LIFE IS A BLUR OF BUSY.
and then you are gone.
You would have loved my Mom.
She was a kick. Funny, quirky, always in motion. Most of my childhood memories are of her teaching me how to do things and flying by carrying a basket of laundry. The hand she was dealt was not always an easy one. Rough upbringing, good too, but rough, as it was for many people who grew up during WWII. She married young and immediately had a family ….and of her 4 children – two had disabilities, in a day and age when there were not the services and support there are today. But like most scrappy women of her generation, she never expected a rose garden and so instead she planted them!
Growing up, our flat Nebraska yard played host to 100 or so Rose bushes. Can you imagine? Raising 4 kids and 100 rose bushes? (Maybe that will be then name of my book.- “Four Kids and 100 Rose Bushes”)!! But My Mom did raise them, and nurture and care for them, and they were her pride and joy, the thing that was all hers, and she would drive from our modest home in Lincoln, Nebraska to the big Capital metropolis – Omaha , to enter “Rose Shows”. My Mom always came home with an armload of ribbons. Once she even allowed me to enter what I have since found out was a new hybrid rose of the day called “Little Darling”. My tiny roses were displayed in a precious porcelain baby carriage, carefully placed by my 6-year-old hand with her help and I too came home with a trophy as long as my arm…the only trophy I ever won. I cherished it and still have it.
My Mom and my brother Ford…notice the Ciggy in my Mom’s hand
and the bandaid on Ford’s toe.
My Mom died 6 1/2 years ago. I miss her every day. Especially I miss talking about the kids with her. Only the one who loved YOU that much can listen for hours on end about the ones you love THAT much and never tire of the stories and the antics. I wish she could see how grown up the kids are, how Tate is tall and handsome like her brothers and Cooper looks to be following in his footsteps. And Phoebe, I wish she could see how beautiful she is, inside and out. I wish I could ask her how she managed 4 teens…and thank her for putting up with me during my rough teen years when I rebelled and pulled away…. I wish she were here.
This was our last Mother’s day … (My Mom despised having her photo taken)
….and I wish my Mom could see my paintings…all which come from the place inside me that she helped grow.
You never stop needing a Mom, even when you are way too old and they are long gone. There is something she gave me that no other person on earth can ever touch. … and I miss that so much.
Happy Mother’s day.
Congratulations to Laura Ferbrache…

YOUNG HOUSE LOVE’S RICHMOND HOMEARAMA SHOWHOUSE IS OPEN!
I was so honored and flattered when my friends John and Sherry asked me if I would paint a portrait of their beloved little pooch BURGER…as a cheeky nod to their adorable little Chihuahua. The “BURGER” (remember the “KRAMER” from Seinfeld) figures prominently in the Living room decor. It sits above the fireplace where a television will eventually live.
The wall above and around the fireplace is painted a Benjamin Moore color called HALE NAVY.
BENJAMIN MOORE HALE NAVY
I have used HALE NAVY a great deal…in my art work and other projects. It is a deep navy…which goes in the direction ever so very slightly towards green than purple if you know what I mean….and so far I have found few colors which do not soar in the presence of NAVY…think about it…
and my new favorite….
BENJAMIN MOORE HALE NAVY AND MINT GREEN
NAVY is a one of my favorite colors to decorate with…I am even a tad obsessed with it…and in my experience…a LITTLE goes a LONG way…I tend toward using navy as an ACCENT or as a pop of color, or like John and Sherry did here to offset other colors, help ART WORK shine or direct focus towards a spectacular piece of furniture…like Phoebe’s twin beds…
PHOEBES ROOM – BENJAMIN MOORE DOWNPOUR BLUE.
Stay tuned for more SHOWHOUSE HIGHLIGHTS…I have a more not yet seen PAINTINGS in the house that I cannot wait to share with you. In the meantime…lets take one more look at the Showhouse Living Room our Buddy Burger!
Phoebe and I are in NYC celebrating her 16th birthday.
She and I have been taking Mother/Daughter trips here since she was 7…and I used to push her petite little self around in a stroller when her little legs would run out of gas.She is the best travel companion and I love introducing her to my past and my people.
the 10th Birthday NYC trip…where did that time go?
WE spent the weekend reuniting with a neighbor friend who has also just turned 16 and her Mom. They moved to Boston when the girls were in the middle of the 5th grade. And it warms my heart when the girls pick up…right where they left off…everytime…as I do with my friend Emma…and it does a body good to have such effortless fun.
Phoebe and Vivian
Yesterday a lovely friend of mine from College threw a Birthday party for another college friend ….
Happy Birthday to my dear dear friend Marc
and a bit of a reunion ensued and I LOVED seeing everyone. Phoebe said to me on the Subway ride home…”At home, you are always my Mom….I love being here and being YOUR daughter”.
Today we have an “extra day”…which is a gift. Every time I visit NYC ….my time is taken, down to the minute…but this time, Phoebe is missing some school and we are going to just play…I will let you know what we do!….Tomorrow is going to be a blast! WE are attending the Katie Couric show…then going to a Book Sighing Party for The Decorate Fearlessly Book Phoebe’s room is in…and to a Broadway show!
I know this is all just our stuff…but I never want to forget this weekend…It has been a trip of a lifetime…and I love my Phoebe so much.

Life is BUSY. For everyone. Everyone has their own version of not enough hours in the day…no matter what your days consist of…there just is never enough time.
A few years ago…at a rather low point, when my MOM died, I sort of stumbled back into painting. It filled a space…and then some and it gave me purpose. I am self-taught , I do what I do because it makes me happy. Color makes me happy. Painting makes me very happy. Pet portraits kind of found me…and they have made me happy. Connecting to people, talking about their pets, many who have died…it makes me feel better. It makes me feel good. Painting has gotten me through losing my Dad, and Maura and Poppi. It has been my lifeboat.
half a tree
I saw this tree at the beach, trimmed back to make room for the telephone poles…. I wanted to paint it…freeze it…remember how it made me smile…
I need to back away from my blog for a bit…not forever, but to recharge my battery. Paint, and live and be a Mom. Be a wife. A sister. A Friend. Be ME. Maybe even cook. It is not that the actual blogging part takes an extraordinary amount of time…but it is that I begin to live to blog and I am much too old for that. I want to be a bit more in my real life…live to find joy and create things that make people happy or annoyed…and then come back with refreshed ideas…gleaned from LIFE not pinterest and perfectly decorated rooms. I want to dig my hands back into my messes and not all the while wonder which part to photograph.
I promise that I will be back…maybe I will even put the barn door on my bathroom! Now, that will be a day worth reporting about.
Spring has Sprung and I am going to go take Charlie for a walk.

HOMEARAMA Showhouse is really coming together…and both yesterday and today…my paintings have been featured on their BLOG….

The Beach was the absolute BEST SPRING BREAK the Doctor or anyone for that matter could have ordered…everything was perfect…the BEAUTIFUL sunny beach days…and even the rainy cold days were perfect…because we were together and away from our crazy life. Charlie of course joined us and got stronger everyday.
FOR FUN one day…I decided to RE -STYLE…one of the beach house bookshelves that I had stared at from my comfy spot on the HUGE sofa….

BOOKSHELVES AFTER – JUST A LITTLE MOVING AROUND IS FUN!
