WEEK 2: Show us your progress. What have you accomplished?

PHOEBE’S BEDROOM MAKEOVER

THE SPINDLE BED

I have looked for THE PERFECT SPINDLE/SPOOL bed for years! A finally I found it! I had intended to wait until the room came together to put it in her room, but my darling daughter and her younger brother were making sledding jumps in the back yard during our last snow storm, using PAM (yes the cooking spray) to accelerate THE icy RUNS and ended up with a bad concussion which kept her out of school for two weeks

…sooooo…we got her a new mattress and set up her new bed….

INTRODUCING Phoebe's NEW OLD SPINDLE BED!!!

INTRODUCING Phoebe’s NEW OLD SPINDLE BED!!!

What you don’t see in this photograph is the DRAMA behind the mattress INSTALLATION. I shall explain…LET US START WITH a little lesson in mattress sizes:

WHAT IS A 3/4 BED?

Many antique beds are called  “3/4 Beds”. They measure about (48″ wide × 73.0–75″ long) and are WIDER than a TWIN (39″ wide x 75″ long) but  a few inches narrower than a FULL -( 54″ wide x 75″ long). The bed Internal FRAME of Phoebe’s Spindle bed (which is about 150 years old)  measures 47″ wide and 75″ long  BUT…when you ADD then 3″ on each side for the side rails and the headboard it is 53″ so I determined that we had LUCKED OUT! WHILE A 3/4 mattresses can be found pretty readily online ,they are a tad more expensive. We could fit a full-sized one into the frame.

I decided that since the bed would already be tall enough, and the mattress extra PLUSH,  to forgo a box spring and just had plywood cut to lay on TOP of the side rails.

The princess and the PEA...we had to pull the bench from my room to help her get into her bed!

The princess and the PEA…we had to pull the bench from my room to help her get into her bed!

I am 5’6″ and the mattress came to my boobs! And Phoebe, ALL 5′ 1″ of her was like the “Princess and the Pea”!

phoebestall beds

There was enough room under her bed to put another bed! I had 3 options as I saw it:

1. Get her stairs to climb into her bed and call it a day.

2. Have a carpenter lower the bed rails by 5″ or

3. Remove 5″ from the bottom of the bed legs.

bedlan

I went with #3. It was not an easy decision to cut into this piece of Furniture Art History , but it made the most sense, the legs were already so tall that the bed looked a bit awkward and was hard to climb into for my petite one..

phoebes bed

We could cut here.

What I did not know then, and what still makes me a little sick to my stomach , is that

I HAD PUT THE RAILS IN UPSIDE DOWN!!!.

IT WAS AN EASY MISTAKE...THE BEDRAILS WERE JUST SQUARES FITTING TO A HOLE!!!

IT WAS AN HONEST MISTAKE!!!!…THE BEDRAILS WERE JUST SQUARES FITTING TO A HOLE!!!

THE SIDE rails were wood and on one side they curved near the ends. I installed them with the CURVE Facing DOWN…and put plywood on TOP of the rails…and the mattress on top of that…. Had I flipped the rails, the mattress would have been AUTOMATICALLY been lowered by 5″. NOW, it would have HAD to be a 3/4 mattress then because it would need to go WITHIN the BED FRAME, NOT resting ON TOP giving it 6 more inches – 3 on each side ….of extra room. But still, when I had those sawed off legs in my hand and my husband put the rails in the opposite way I had them…and I realized that ALL ALONG I had based  every decision with the rails in upside down..my heart sank and I almost cried…I quickly calculated “Could I hit rewind on my life by 5 minutes and reattached the legs?”… but it was too late. It was done. And in the end, she was able to have her PLUSH FULL sized mattress, the bed is a better height and our efforts were not in vain!!

PHOEBE'S NEW BED!

Phoebe's bed 2

You know how you want something so bad, and you wait and wait for it, and then you DO FINALLY get the thing you dreamed of…and you can’t believe you HAVE the thing you dreamed of…THAT is how I feel about this bed…I know it is JUST a THING, but I have looked for years…I just love this bed so much and I am thrilled that my daughter will have this bed one day, in her home…perhaps even in her own child’s room!!! And they can laugh and chat and tell the story of how Gramma cut the legs off the bed when she put the rails in upside down…Good Times!

GETTING PERSONAL – 7 WEEKS LEFT UNTIL GRADUATION

THERE ARE 7 WEEKS and change left until my firstborn son graduates High School. He will be in very good company…at his school, in our town, around the country, and the world…my niece graduates this year as well…but this boy is the one I live with, the child I have raised and this boy is moving on and up and soon…out to take the next step in his big wonderful exciting life.

tatetshirt

I look back over the pages of this blog and see whole days invested in finding the perfect paint color…teaching myself to cut and lay tile, designing fabric from a painting and then turning that fabric into my Living room drapes.

None of these trajectories of learning and growth come close to the winding road of parenting. I have documented my children’s life extensively in photographs but have always found myself at a loss for worlds when it comes to describing this journey. Other than to say”We did this…then that..” Sometimes in fact, I feel it is a disservice to the intricacies of our days to try and sum it all up. Still,  I wish I had written more…because so much of it gets lost in the DOING of the NEXT thing…and the next…and the next…

I hope to hold myself together for the next chunk of time…to take it all in..not be muddled by the emotion and the “how did this get here so fast” but truth be told, my head is spinning and I do have NO IDEA how we got here so fast. I could tell you stories all about my son, days and adventures but this blog is not about him and his story is not mine to tell. But I can tell you about being his Mom. How hard some days have been and how easy he has made so many. Like the history books, I recall the BIG events..but so much of Tate is in the details, the little moments…like how he used to hum the whole time he built his legos.

tatelegos

I want to honor this special time in our life by taking some space HERE to take you along my ride. These next few weeks. I honestly will probably put more thought into this time for the amount of time it takes to write a blog post that I do for the remainder of each week…but I want to remember this time, the preciousness of it, the color of it, how it feels and tastes…I will do this all again next year when my daughter finishes high school…but the FIRST time the senses are in overdrive…and I don’t want all of this to get lost in the wallpapering and painting of the house.

Thank you for indulging me in my journey. I am sure there a great many of you who can relate.

MONDAY MAKEOVER – PHOEBE’S SPINDLE BED

SPRING BREAK – I AM WRITING THIS as I look across at the ocean…nice….

OCEAN

it is not showing up but where it is white by the sky..THAT is the ocean!

A FEW WEEKS AGO, my neighbor, knowing my YEARS long quest to find a Spindle/Spool Bed alerted me to one she had seen at an Antiques store nearby. I drove to the store TUCKAHOE ANTIQUESI always LOVE finding these places, just a few miles from my house and wonder “HOW did I NEVER know this was here?!”

My trip was not wasted..the BED was even better than I could have dreamed, the EXACT style I have looked for…PLUS they were having a 30% off sale and I bought it on the spot! I  think it was a steal at $105!

phoebs bed5

I KNEW IMMEDIATELY I would not paint this bed…The wood is beautiful!

As usual, the bed frame rested in the hall for a month, waiting for the Bedroom makeover to begin…but then, Phoebe got a concussion sledding on ICE runs which she and her brother constructed during the last snow storm…in the back yard…and was home from school for a few weeks…We decided to go ahead and get her a NEW mattress and get the bed set up sooner vs later…

INTRODUCING Phoebe's NEW OLD SPINDLE BED!!!

There was an little…well NOT SO LITTLE  “mattress” issue which required some DIY savvy which I am saving to discuss in this Thursdays One Room Challenge POST…

I AM OFF TO THE BEACH!!!

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

PS – If you are looking for antiques, I highly recommend you check out  the TUCKAHOE ANTIQUES website!!!! – They update their site pretty regularly and I think their prices are great. They are owned by the same people who own the  COVESVILLE STORE … and COVESVILLE is LEGEND around here in the ANTIQUES DEPARTMENT!!! It reminded me of the ANTIQUE stores my Mom used to drag take us to…not a piece of painted furniture in the place…just great Antiques!!!…

MONDAY MAKEOVER – 5 NEW ABSTRACT PAINTINGS

I live in a Rural town, just outside of a jewel of a small town just two hours from the Capital of the United States. If you have never driven through Virginia in the Spring…you should at least once. The greens are so blue-green lovely and they wrap themselves around you and make you feel safe.

"BIRDSEYE" 30 X 30

“BIRDSEYE” 30 X 30

When I think about my life and the journey I have taken as an artist…I often get to the point where I landed in Rural Virginia and I am basically stumped. No part of who I am pointed or pulled me here…other than my own inner voice which followed my life here. But I do feel like that process is one of my favorite parts of LIFE. The parts that don’t make sense drive me to create. And THAT makes perfect sense, the most sense of all.

"UNDERTOW" 36 X 36

“UNDERTOW” 36 X 36

I paint in my dining room. The dining room table, a long John Stuart table with two leaves is usually divided in two sections…with one half my paints, brushes, inspiration photos and diet coke cans and the other half is kept tidy with a tablecloth..and that is where we eat. Unlike most homes, our dining room is probably the most active room in the house. I paint, we eat, the kids do homework and crafts and print up papers…it is a busy room. It is also to Puppy’s favorite room to have “accidents” which drives me nuts but Rome was not built-in a day.

"COUNTRY CLUB" 30 X 30

“COUNTRY CLUB” 30 X 30

I like to listen to something, music, a book or most often a movie or TV show while I paint. Right now I am RE-watching all of MAD MEN – getting myself back into the storyline and the 1960’s and 70’s  in preparation of the last episodes which start NEXT week!!! The ART in MAD MEN Is INCREDIBLE! (great video here) Pollock and Rothko, abstracts and color…I will often rewind to look at the ART piece and wonder about the story behind them. The authenticity and details in that show are unsurpassed…

SUNDAY

SUNDAY

I was inspired to paint some Abstract work last week. And as usual ended up in the PINKS. I LOVE painting ABSTACTS. It is a nice balance to my commission work where details are important to getting the likeness correct…One is coloring INSIDE and the other coloring OUTSIDE the lines…

Let me know if you have a favorite! They will be added to my UGallery soon I hope! For now you can buy them directly from me!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! – HERE THERE AND EVERYWHERE

Today is a very special day.

March 29 is the Birthday of my brother Ford, my Father in law – Lenny (aka Poppi) and my Sister-in-law – Maura.

Last year, on this day, Both Poppi and Maura celebrated in Heaven for the first time. It was and still is  – surreal. And my mind spins that the day is here again and I am still at a loss. I mean, life has gone on. PLOWED FORWARD. Figuratively, Literally…and everything in between. Freakishly so, but what are the options? LIFE is to be LIVED.

There is no book called “Living without Those you Love – for Dummies” with a chapter called “Birthdays”… We are ALL just winging it. But I do know this much : Ford, Maura and Poppi are the absolute LAST people who would want their Birthdays’s to be sad..here, there or Anywhere…so we just smile, We celebrate , we have a drink and some cake and say….

CHEERS!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND WE LOVE YOU.

and  we HULA HOOP!

Ellie!

MY NIECE ELLIE!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THREE OF MY FAVORITE PEOPLE…

who ARE

A HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
