GRADUATION DAY

I was so naive. I thought that by the time my firstborn graduated High School I would have WAY more figured out, when in fact, life baffles me more than ever. Most of my life is as clear as the images seen from a moving train…they fly past me and I am hard pressed to grab one much less make sense of it ANY OF IT.

tatetshirt

What I do know is that life keeps going…like the moving train…and whether or not you choose consciously or by circumstance to hop off and PROCESS a bit of it…is all up to you. Right now..I am in the LIVING car…moving, doing, feeling and creating. Thank goodness for photos that freeze moments in time, making them seem slower and more articulate than they do in person.

I plan to take a lot of photos tomorrow, as I watch my boy in his wrinkled blue gown and awkward cap…I plan to shoot away while the moments…surreal as they may be…fly past me…I am certain I will be flooded…with memories…..

TATE AND THE TREE...THEY BOTH HAVE GROWN ...ALOT!

TATE AND THE TREE…THEY BOTH HAVE GROWN …!

Way back when..once upon a time….I had BIG plans…”I will make him a book, collect all of his “FIRST DAY’S” compile them in a neat little package!!!”…but alas…those sentimental projects are lost in the living. Maybe one day, maybe when he has a child go to kindergarten ..when he and I share the moment…BUT …not today….now now….

The hardest lesson I have learned as a parent is that despite the fact that we are both looking at LIFE square in the face from the same sofa….the view from where HE sits and where I sit are vastly different…and aways will be.

MEMORIAL DAY – MY MIA

MY MIA BRACLET BORE THE NAME OF CDR STANLEY OLMSTEAD. I WORE THIS BRACELET ALL THROUGH MY TEENS.

MY MIA BRACELET BORE THE NAME OF CDR STANLEY OLMSTEAD. I WORE THIS BRACELET ALL THROUGH MY TEENS.

In the 1970’s, we wore Prisoner of War,

POW Bracelets and Missing in Action,

MIA Bracelets bearing the name of a captured or lost soldier.

We did this to keep this person in our hearts and minds, even if we did not know them personally. We proudly wore these bracelets, and some still do, as a symbol of hope that the POW’s and MIA’s would return home to their families.

stanley olmstead

When I wore my MIA bracelet, I was a kid…I knew little about what the Vietnam war REALLY meant except that it dominated the conversation every day and the news every night. When would it end? Why were they fighting? How many were killed today? When is your big brother leaving?

Living in Tampa Florida, many of my friends had Fathers and even brothers in the service and some even missing in action.

cva62

Mr Olmstead was one year younger than my Dad. I bought my bracelet for $1.00 from a girl who was selling them to raise money for the families of servicemen missing in action. I thought about the day when Stanley and I  would meet and I would tell him I wore his bracelet and never took it off even to shower and I would offer him the bracelet as a memento.

LCDR STANLEY EDWARD OLMSTEAD BORN NOVEMBER 12, 1933.

LCDR STANLEY EDWARD OLMSTEAD BORN NOVEMBER 12, 1933.HE WAS 32 YEARS OLD WHEN HIS PLANE WAS SHOT DOWN AND HE WAS REPORTED MISSING IN ACTION IN 1965.

MY MIA was LCDR Stanley Edward Olmstead. He was from Marshall Oklahoma and was born on November 12, 1933. He was in the US Navy in the Fighter Squadron 84. He was also a father; his daughter Dixie was 2 and her brother, Mickey was 5, when their father’s F-4 Phantom was gunned down by North Vietnamese artillery fire on Oct. 17, 1965.

I have copied the story of his mission and loss from POWNETWORK.

Here is an excerpt :

“SYNOPSIS: LT Roderick Mayer was a pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier USS INDEPENDENCE (CVA-62). On October 17, 1965 he and his Radar Intercept Officer (RIO), LTJG David Wheat launched in their F4B Phantom fighter jet for a day strike mission on the Thai Nguyen bridge northeast of Hanoi.

On the same day, a second Phantom flown by LCDR Stanley E. Olmstead, with LTJG Porter A. Halyburton as his RIO, and a third Phantom flown by LTJG Ralph Gaither and LTJG Rodney A/ Knutson also launched from the USS INDEPENCENCE. These four pilots were part of Fighter Squadron 84, the “Jolly Rogers”. Mayer and Wheat were part of the carriers Fighter Squadron 41. All were dispatched to the same general mission area near the city of Thai Nguyen.

The three Phantoms were all shot down within a few miles of each other. Knutson and Gaither were shot down in Long Song Province, North Vietnam, near the border of China, or about 75 miles northeast of the city of Thai Nguyen. Olmstead and Halyburton were shot down in Long Son Province about 40 miles east of the city of Thai Nguyen. Mayer and Wheat were shot down about 55 miles east-northeast of the city of Thai Nguyen, in Long Son Province.

The fates of these six men from the USS INDEPENDENCE was not clear at the time they were shot down. Their status changed from Reported Dead to Prisoner of War or Missing in Action. At the end of the war, only Olmstead and Mayer remained missing. Ultimately, they were declared dead for lack of evidence that they were still alive.

When the war ended, refugees from the communist-overrun countries of Southeast Asia began to flood the world, bringing with them stories of live GI’s still in captivity in their homelands. Since 1975, nearly 10,000 reports relating to Americans missing in Southeast Asia have been received. Many authorities believe that hundreds of Americans are still held in the countries in Southeast Asia.

The U.S. Government operates on the “assumption” that one or more men are being held, but that it cannot “prove” that this is the case, allowing action to be taken. Meanwhile, low-level talks between the U.S. and Vietnam proceed, yielding a few sets of remains when it seems politically expedient to return them, but as yet, no living American has returned.

…….Stanley E. Olmstead was promoted to the rank of Commander during the period he was maintained missing. Porter A. Halyburton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander during the period he was maintained as a prisoner of war.

f4-usn

the following addendum was added to the bio..years later…and proved very significant …..

“Hello,…..I have a slight correction to make. I say slight, but depending on your point of view, it’s major.

The RIO, Porter Halyburton, is a friend of mine. Here is his account of what happened that day: “When we were hit I called to Stan, but he didn’t respond. His head was slumped down and he was unresponsive. As the ridgeline was coming up, I had to eject immediately and did so. Seconds later, the aircraft crashed into the ridgeline. There was a large explosion upon impact, as we had a full load of ordinance. I was able to observe the aircraft the entire time from when I ejected until it crashed. Stan did not eject.”

The ridgeline Porter refers to was to be their turning point. Upon arrival at the ridgeline, they were to head due west to the target at Thai Nguyen.

While it is true that no one saw Porter eject, largely because no one was looking when they were hit, someone (Porter) DID watch the plane, and therefore Stan Olmstead, from the time it was hit until it crashed.

Porter said he had clear field of vision as he slowly drifted down to earth. He could clearly see, much to his dismay, that LCDR. Stanley Olmstead did not eject prior to impact.

Porter Halyburton, while retired from the Navy, is currently an instructor at the Naval War College in Rhode Island

Regards, Doug”

STANLEY EDWARD OLMSTEAD is honored on Panel 2E, Row 125 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. I visited the Memorial a few years ago…there are few words to describe it’s impact…and I saw CDR Olmstead’s name…it was a profoundly moving experience .

CDR Olmstead went missing 50 years ago. He would be a senior citizen now and maybe even a Grandfather. He would have watched Mickey and Dixie grow up. The information we now have about what happened to servicemen, captured, tortured and held as prisoners sometimes for years is daunting. The cycle has far from stopped, even if the battles names have changed…

BUGS I HAVE KNOWN II

When I was packing up my city self to move to the country,
I remember a friend, who had moved out here a few years before, saying “the one thing that took
some getting used to..was ALL the bugs.”
They are everywhere.
They are always there.
I am not one of those people who flip out at the sight of a spider. I have no trouble squishing a tick.
When those million leg bugs come out every night to make their rounds, I can sleep in peace.
I don’t hate bugs. (EXCEPT STINK BUGS) But I also…do not love them.
Which is a good thing….because ….They are everywhere…in the country.
My sister in law, told me I should make a coffee table book…Bugs I have Known.
Here are some the entries.
They show up…everywhere.
COOPER’S “LEAF BUG”
Cooper was my “bug guy”, never intimidated by creepy crawly things, he brought me bugs of all
sizes and shapes…all the time. This was a favorite which resulted in quite the photo shoot.
He called it his “LEAF BUG”
PRAYING MANTIS…
These skinny pre-historic looking things show up like a quiet person who enters the room without you
knowing. You look over and realize they HAD to have been there a while to have gotten for
example…on your flashlight…but you never heard the door slam behind them!!!!
We call them “GOOD LUCK”

THE CLOWN BUG

THIS BUG is my favorite. This photo was taken 8 years ago…and sadly I have not seen this kind of bug since…. we named it “the CLOWN BUG” because it reminded us of a clown fish…..

I remember being so excited when we got a NEW SIDEBOARD/ credenza that had the STEREO BUILT IN!!!!  But quite often your sound system sat out on a piece of furniture. STEREOS TOOK UP A LOT OF SPACE. The turntable, the amplifier, the tuner and the speakers. Add a lamp and you have a LONG piece of furniture. I LOVE THEM.

THESE days our sound systems fit in the palm of our hand but our TV’s are long and skinny and are perfectly at home atop a long skinny CREDENZA!!!!I could and do have one in every room downstairs!

LAMPS

I KNOW THIS PROBABLY IS NOT TRUE, but I feel like in the 60’s, lamps went from utilitarian to creative pieces of ART and LIGHT…YES, MANY WERE AS UGLY AS SIN…but many are wonderful and ETSY has them in abundance…and Mid Century INSPIRED lamps are EVERYWHERE!

AND OF COURSE …..EVERYBODY IS NUTS ABOUT THE SPUTNIK CEILING LAMPS!

Now, it is believed Lightolier was the first to produce such a light, but since 1960, numerous designers and companies have copied the overall design, thus making it well affordable and available today, whether you want a vintage version or a newer one. These lights come in many different sizes and hold many bulbs so a wall dimmer is a good option for this pendant as well. Some of these lights even offer bulb caps that resemble a star or icicle. Prices range from $95 to $450 for newer versions and $75 to $850 for vintage lights, depending on size and condition.

Presumably Lightolier was the first to produce these “Sputnik” lights,  but since 1960, the design has been made by countless designers and manufacturers and can be found in a wide range of prices and sizes.

I HAVE A MAD MEN hangover this morning.

TOTAL WITHDRAWL has set in.

I watched, and RE watched the VERY FINAL final
episode of MAD MEN last night after having binge watched much of the first 7 seasons for the last
few weeks.
I may just have to give
up TV altogether for a while….everything feels strangely bland and slow and  sober and sloppy.
Watching Mad Men was like seeing the world, or at least a fictionalized
slice of … of my childhood.
And it was just plain FANTASTIC TELEVISION.
I loved it all…the acting, the costumes, the sets, the colors, the sounds and the story.
The Design. The attention to detail and authenticity was unsurpassed…and it had a soul.

DON AND PEGGY

EACH LIKE A LITTLE PART OF MYSELF, I COULD RELATE TO EACH ONE IN A DIFFERENT WAY…THEY MADE ME THINK AND CRY AND LUST AND YEARN AND HATE SIMULTANEOUSLY  WISH FOR MORE AND FEEL GRATEFUL …

and ….I MISS MAURA, MY SISTER IN LAW, WHO INTRODUCED ME TO MAD MEN, SHE KNEW I WOULD LOVE IT AND GAVE ME SEASON 1-4 FOR CHRISTMAS A FEW YEARS BEFORE SHE PASSED AWAY. IT CONNECTED US LIKE A LIFE NOT LIVED AND AT THE VERY LAST MOMENT OF THE VERY LAST SCENE…I MISSED HER SO MUCH.SHE WOULD HAVE LOVED IT.

FAREWELL MADMEN.

SENIOR NIGHT

T MINUS TWO WEEKS AND COUNTING….

IT IS GETTING CLOSER AND CLOSER…AND I AM LESS AND LESS READY FOR THIS EVENT TO TAKE HOW DID WE GET HERE SO FAST?

image image

Tonight is Senior Night at Tate’s soccer game. He is my first SENIOR so this is all new to me…Parents and Seniors are recognized…

and we walk across the Soccer / Football field at the beginning of the game. Perfect excuse for a pedicure don’t you think???

I am so proud of Tate and his achievements in Soccer. All he talked about as an 8 year old soccer player was playing in High School. We hoped for the best. But it is incredibly competitive in our area…and he did not make the JV team when he tried out in the 9th grade. He was heart broken. But the next day he went to the coach and offered to be the team manager… just so he could practice with the team and get better.  The next year, not only did he MAKE the team but he was made Captain of the JV team! Last year he was the ONLY junior to make it as a field player on the Varsity team (there were an amazing group of seniors) and the team went on to win the State Championship!!! This year once again he is the only senior field player and the other senior is the goalie. Why do I tell you all of this .. Because I am so proud. I have told Tate that he has already has shown himself that if he wants something bad enough… And he works  for it.. He can make changes happen! It was his dream !

And tonight we honor him!!!

thanks for indulging me in the moment of parental pride!!!

(the announcement above is the “shining laurel” Graduation card from Tiny Prints…I forgot to get the new the school provides! But I love how these turned out!)

One of the first things that stole my heart when I very first saw this house, despite it’s decrepit state, were the 5 fireplaces…all non working, but still, here is just something so magical about a fireplace..the mantle, the decorating possibilities…their demand for attention…I love them. PAINTING TODAY

image

I am painting today. I have the worst time staying focused in my house but I have come to the conclusion that this is my biggest challenge and if I can stay focused here…. I will have zen like capabilities!!

anyway I was adjusting my easel and looked down and almost started to cry  when I saw all of the old paint collected in my paint tray …(photo above…

I know this will sound stupid but there are so many days when I ask myself “why’s are you doing this to yourself!!!” “Let it go and JUST be one person instead of 4!” But the answer comes back ” because this is the thing that makes my heart feel right.”
