PANTONE’S COLOR OF THE YEAR – MARSALA

For nearly 25 years, PANTONE has been nominating an ANNUAL “COLOR OF THE YEAR” .

Their prediction is INTENDED to  DETERMINE  ONE color in the upcoming year, often an underdog in the color world, which will dominate and influence design and fashion alike.

The 2015 color of the year last is

 MARSALA

Pantone2015 COLOR OF THE YEAR MARSALA

I have read a number of reviews and blog posts on Pantone’s choice…indifferent at best…more frequently despised.  Like many of its predecessors, Marsala is not a new color, simply one which is being reimagined…on it’s last go around it was called Burgundy and paired with golds and browns…this incarnation  it is warming up our cooler dominant palate of grays and blues.

I also think they are a little late. I challenge you to watch the current season of TV and NOT see nearly every character in Burgundy…a burgundy tie, jacket, sweater, shirt, dress…then go pick up a magazine..maybe it is the holiday seasons influence…but Burgundy….I’m sorry, “MARSALA” is already everywhere!!!!

Once upon a time, Burgundy, spent most of its time in the company of earthy somewhat plain colors…but now, this versatile color has shaken the doldrums and is reinvigorated with new color companions…teals, metallic golds, blues and grays…even whites…..

  1. Like the green color, I’m not the biggest fan. However, it looks lovely with the arctic grey in your friend’s house. I doubt I would use it in my home as I like brighter, lighter colors. For clothing and accessories, I do like it. I remember when I graduated college in the 80s I bought a burgundy purse and shoes and used them for a long time for work. I still like burgundy for fall/winter clothing as an alternative to so much black, navy, and grey.

  2. I still contest that burgundy is different from Marsala. Burgundy is deep, rich and classic. This Marsala is thin, flat and matte. Not for me!

  3. i totally agree that Burgundy is a far cry prettier than Marsala…but, when I went to find photos of Marsala all I could find were photos of dried blood and faded tin roofs…what were they thinking…I really want to know…!
