DAY 18 – DOG – A DAY – MEET “FOSTER”

FOSTER THE AUSSIE!

IS A MINIATURE AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD

“We got FOSTER from a breeder at 6 months. The family that was going to take him in changed their minds, so he was the only puppy they had. I think it was meant to be!”

“When we arrived at their lake house he came running down the driveway from the back of the house and greeted us. We instantly knew we couldn’t go home without him. We named him Foster because Fosters beer has the slogan “Australian for beer” and he is a miniature Australian Shepherd. ūüôā He has an insane obsession with balls! He carries one around with him constantly and basically only let’s it out of his mouth to eat! “

5 FUN FACTS ABOUT MINIATURE AUSTRAILIAN SHEPHERD

1.Exceptional agility combined with strength and stamina allows for working over a variety of terrain.

2.The double coat of medium length and coarseness may be solid in color or merled, with or without white and/or tan (copper) markings. He traditionally has a docked or natural bobtail.

SWEET LITTLE FOSTER

3. They can become nervous and destructive if left alone too much without enough mental and physical exercise. They need a job to do, as the breed is very intelligent, active and thus easily bored.

4. The gene for the beautiful merle coloration also carries a blind/deaf factor. Be sure to check the hearing on merle puppies.

5.¬†A breeding program to develop the Miniature Australian Shepherd (North American Miniature Australian Shepherd) was begun in 1968 using small¬†Australian Shepherds. Breeders bred them down in size to produce a smaller dog and today continue to strive to produce a mirror image of the Australian Shepherd in a size that fits well into today’s lifestyle, without sacrificing instinct, ability or character.

Day 17 – DOG-A-DAY – MEET “SADIE”

TGIF everybody!!! I am super excited because in just a few hours I am going to hit the road and go see my baby girl for the night. I am picking her up at her dorm, taking her on a Target run, getting a manicure. And seeing a movie at the place where they bring you dinner !!!! I will be there less that 24 hours but it will be all Phoebe and me and I am so EXCITED!!!

i am also thrilled to introduce you to:

SADIE

SWEET SADIE IS A

GERMAN WIRE HAIRED POINTER

“Sadie¬†is a 3 year old German Wire Haired Pointer, whom we adopted when we were living in Wilmington, North Carolina. She was bred to be a show dog, but because she was smaller than desired, she was unwanted. We had a serendipitous meeting when we happened to visit a dog show, and a few weeks later, she came home with us. Having lived in a kennel for the first year and a half of her life, it took her several weeks to come out of the corner, and a few months before she was comfortable letting us pet her. Today, she is the sweetest, most loving, and loyal dog you can imagine. She charms everyone with her beautiful eyes, but still takes a while to warm up to strangers. She spends her days lounging on our temperpedic mattress with her head on a pillow, and relishes her evening walks or visits to the dog park. She’s come a long way since her days in the dog kennel, but we are the ones whose lives truly have been enriched!”

5 FUN FACTS ABOUT GERMAN WIRE HAIRED POINTERS!

BEAUTIFUL SADIE

1.The German Wirehaired Pointer was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to be a versatile hunting dog breed, a job at which he still excels today. He can hunt any game on any terrain and point and retrieve from land or water.

2. A facial beard gives him a distinctive expression, and a docked tail held horizontally quivers with excitement. Known as the Drahthaar in his homeland of Germany, the breed was developed to be an all around hunting companion, useful for hunting all types of game in all conditions.

3. Training him to compete in obedience, tracking, agility, rally, or other dog sports gives him a job, mental stimulation, and exercise.

THANKS SADIE!

4. Can be suspicious of strangers and aloof with all but his family
5.German hunters in search of a rugged dog who could hunt any kind of game on any terrain created the German Wirehaired Pointer in the late 1800s. In him they blended the best qualities of the Pointer, Poodle, and Foxhound to develop an all-purpose dog who could point and retrieve on land and in water, no matter what the weather or environment.

thanks for sharing Sadie with us!!! Stay tuned to see who drops in tomorrow.

Beginning March 1 – the Dog A Day will be presented daily on its OWN PAGE!!! The blog will go back to home and design posts and each day a new dog will be introduced on the special page!!!

DAY 16 – DOG -A- DAY – MEET “FINLEY”

FINLEY

WAS A ONE OF KIND GREAT DOG.

I knew the second I read Finley’s story…that I had to paint him.

I will share it with you….

“We rescued¬†Finley¬†when he was 6 years old – his ¬†family brought him to the vet to be put down as he had contracted mange and it spread to the mother and daughter. (Apparently it wasn’t diagnosed very late). Anyway, the vet said he would take¬†Finley¬†in and care for him and the mange – but he wouldn’t put a good, healthy dog down. The family surrendered¬†Finley¬†to the vet. We found him by chance on¬†petfinder.com¬†I believe, took an hour ride to meet him and the rest is history. When we met¬†Finley¬†we noticed some scabbing and dried blood on his tail which seemed odd. We asked the vet what happened and he said that¬†Finley¬†has been so happy that his wagging tail has hit the cage one too many times….we were sold.”

“We adopted¬†Finley¬†and he was the addition to our family that we had hoped for. We had 9 1/2 years
with him and had to put him down in April 2015…hardest day of our lives. But, he brought us great
joy and he was a wonderful dog for the kids to have as our first family pet. “

FINLEY TRIES TO GET THE SAND CRABS!!!!

MY THOUGHTS ON THE DOG-A-DAY PROJECT – 16 DOGS UNDER MY BELT….

I started this project..almost on a dare to myself..

“I BET YOU CAN’T paint a dog-a-day for a month!!!”… I challenged myself.

“Want make a bet!” I sassed back to myself..

I reached out to YOU and the rest is on the last 16 pages of this blog.

But, in the process of painting all of your dogs… something else started to happen…surrounded by these photos, and your stories..I connected to YOU ….in ways i did not anticipate.

Here is one of the MANY wonderful things about

Dogs.

…These furry…and sometimes, not so furry creatures come to us. Or we go to them…but in any event …they add to our lives in ways that cannot be measured…unquantified…but that we KNOW – deep in our hearts.

¬†Some dogs challenge our patience, like my Bean who lives for adventure…and some save our lives…Like Charlie who saved mine when he woke me up one hour before the ceiling caved in over my bed…(true story)…and some just save our hearts..and remind us that LOVE is WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT…

See the thing about dogs is that ALL they ask…ALL they want from us is that we LET them LOVE us!!! Completely ¬†– unselfishly… THEY CAN TEACH US SO MUCH!!!

Keep loving your dogs and keep sending me your photos and your stories.

I have now decided to paint 100 dogs in 100 days…and I just cannot wait to meet yours and YOU!!!!

DAY 15 – DOG-A-DAY – MEET “GABBY”

“GABBY”

was adopted at 4 months from the Humane Society.

“It all started with a photo that I saw on Petfinder.com. She was listed as 4 months old and Maltese/terrier mix. I immediately fell in love with that little face… Apparently, she was meant to come home with me because she was still there when I went back a month later.¬†“

“… she ended up being one of the best decisions I have ever made. She brings so much joy to our family. She is the smartest little lady ever. She loves to go walking. She always grabs her harness when I ask her it she wants to go walking. She loves her cats, she has six! …

“Her favorite thing to do is to go to the beach..¬†When we are traveling and as soon as she smells the salt air and sees the bay she starts whining and scratching at the window. “

HAPPY VALENTINES!!! DAY 14 – DOG-A-DAY – MEET “BRODY”

One of the VERY FIRST Pet portraits I ever did was a breed I had never heard of…”THE VIZSLA”

I HAVE since come to KNOW and ADORE VIZSLAS

¬†MEET “BRODY” THE VIZSLA

“Brody is our 55 pound lap dog!”

¬†“He has¬†earned the reputation for being the neighborhood’s honorary mayor.

He hasn’t met a person he doesn’t like, and he’s the one all dogs love to chase; they hardly ever catch him, though! We adopted him at 10 weeks old and have had 6 years of unconditional love. In 2015, we welcomed our daughter Colette, who has since become the apple of his eye.¬†“

 FIVE FUN FACTS ABOUT VIZSLAS

VIZSLA PUPPIES ARE CRAZY CUTE!!!

  1. Lovingly NICNAMED “VELCRO VIZSLA” Because they are hardwired to stick close to their humans. therefore, they do not do well if left alone for long periods. They LOVE people.
  2. This dog will bark and alert its owners when an intruder is present. It is not considered to be a very protective breed. They’re unlikely to scare off intruders.
  3. You can’t use strong discipline with this breed. Sitting down and having a conversation about inappropriate behavior works best!

    VIZSLAFOTO

4. The aftermath of World War I, followed by the ravages of World War II, nearly brought an end to the breed, however. Fortunately, the Vizsla managed to survive, and the first members of the breed were imported to the United States in the early 1950s.
5.¬†You may need to control his tendency to mouth your hands — provide a box filled with toys so he can carry things around in his mouth.

DAY 13 – DOG-A-DAY MEET “CUPCAKE” AND SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

I love Cupcakes..and I love today’s Dog-a-Day is a TOY POODLE named….

¬†“CUPCAKE”

” Cupcake is very smart. ¬†Her most favorite thing to do is to wait for the mail to come through the mail slot on our front door every day. ¬†If not home when it arrives, she leads me to the front door as soon as I come in. ¬†The funny thing is, she seems to know that mail doesn’t come on Sundays, as she doesn’t wait for it¬†on Sunday¬†mornings. ¬†I don’t know if it’s because of the change in routine, or her biological clock has figured it out.”

¬† ¬†” Another thing Cupcake loves to do during the summer months is “help” me hang laundry outside.
As soon as I pick up hangers or the laundry basket, she is ready to go.  During the day, I might go
back and forth several times bringing in the clothes as they dry, and she is always right there by my
side¬†each time.”
1. Poodles come in 3 sizes : Toy, Miniature and Standard. These aren’t different breeds, just different
sizes of the same dog.

Tie dye poodle

fur and cold paws, many of the dogs had to be dropped off at checkpoints. This struggle led to a new
rule that dictated only northern breeds like Siberian huskies and Alaskan Malamutes are allowed to
race. This measure ensures the safety of breeds that aren’t cut out for the extreme cold.
3. Among the many many celebrities that have Poodles – Elvis Loved them!
4. Poodles are one of the smartest breeds, second only to the border collie in rankings of canine
intelligence. Their smarts make them extremely easy to train and a favorite of circuses.
5. The poodle has been bred with other popular dogs like Labrador retrievers, (Labradoodles)
cocker spaniels,  (Cockapoo) and   wheaten terriers (Whoodle) to make more hypoallergenic
breeds.

DAY 12 – DOG-A-DAY MEET – “HOBBES”

“HOBBES”

IS An Adorable, feisty and sweet – 12 POUND “RAT TERRIER”.

“While visiting family in Texas, this little dog just showed up from out of the brush-it’s pretty rough country down there. He followed us whenever we left the house to the barn or the field or wherever and was waiting when we returned.¬† Long story short, we couldn’t find where he came from so we brought him home to live with us. “

” We will have had him for 13 years which means he’s anywhere from 14-16 years old.¬† He runs the pack of 3 dogs I have. Since coming north from the Rio Grande valley, Hobbes has always loved the heat.¬† His favorite place is to lie on his bed in front of a roaring fire and will stay there until he is left panting… he also lies directly on the sidewalk in the hot sun rather than the cool grass in the summer. ¬† He absolutely loves people and will go up to anyone who gives him a smile and share delicate, little kisses.”

5 FUN FACTS ABOUT RAT TERRIERS

THE DAILY PUPPY

  1. President Theodore Roosevelt is said to have given the Breed its name after his own terrier had eradicated the Rat infestation in the white house.
  2. Rat Terriers are among the most trainable of terriers, and sports like agility, flyball, and coursing are excellent ways to socialize them and burn off excess energy.

    A PLACE TO LOVE DOGS

  3. Rat Terriers love to dig, and they can get out of a fenced yard relatively easily. Provided they have the proper protection, they are able to spend a good amount of time outdoors. They love to be inside the house and outside to play.
  4. The Rat Terrier was officially recognized by the AKC in 2013.
  5. They are also very good swimmers, not bashful or afraid and have no problem with the water.

Thank you Diana for sharing Hobbes with us…

I SAW “A DOGS PURPOSE” TODAY…LOVED IT!

Stay Tuned tomorrow I will be making a very exciting announcement !!!

DAY 11 – DOG-A-DAY PAINTING – MEET “BEAR”

“BEAR”

WAS AN YELLOW *** “ENGLISH” LAB

a big sweet boy.

Winnie’s Pooh Bear of Rockfish aka “Bear” son of Winnie Woodworth (mother) and Woody Voshell ¬†(father)
Obedient, happy, hungry, alpha, curious, sweet, stoic, beautiful, regal, loyal and loving till the very end.
Man, he was such an awesome dog!

BEAR

5 FUN FACTS ABOUT LABRADORS RETRIEVERS

  1. Labrador retrievers were bred to be the perfect water dogs: They have water-resistant double coats that provide insulation, and their short fur keeps them warm but doesn’t drag them down when it gets wet. Their webbed toes facilitate speedy swimming. Fishermen used the dogs to bring in nets, pull ropes between boats, and recover escaped fish.

    MY COUSINS’ BEAUTIFUL LAB ¬†NAMED “CONNIE”…SHE WOULD SIT ON THE DOCK UNTIL ALL THE KIDS WERE BACK AND IN OFF THEIR BOATS.

  2. Labrador retrievers actually come from Newfoundland, not Labrador.
  3. Regardless of the parents’ color, a single litter can include black, yellow, and chocolate puppies. There are two genes that cause the pigmentation of the coat, so the variation can be just as common as different hair colors in a human family.

    LABRADOR RETRIEVER

  4. In 1981, a black Labrador mix named Bosco won the election to be the honorary mayor of Sunol, Calif., beating out two human candidates for the job.
  5. Thanks to their powerful noses, Labrador retrievers have¬†been trained¬†to sniff out and identify early stages of cancer. Through work with cancer cell samples, dogs can learn to¬†smell the disease. The canine doctors can make a diagnosis by smelling a patient‚Äôs breath, blood, or stool. So far, the only known way to screen for easy stages of ovarian cancer is by letting a lab sniff the patient‚ÄĒthey have very¬†high success rates.

OUR DOG CHARLIE IS HALF LAB…ALL LOVE…

ME AND CHARLIE- the big boy

****The terms ‚ÄėAmerican Labs‚Äô and ‚ÄėEnglish Labs‚Äô aren‚Äôt absolute and strict terms, but more a useful guide of the probable type of Lab being described. There are many exceptions. GENERALLY SPEAKING, However, what I have come to know as the distinction is that the “English” have larger heads..and are stockier ….BUT, you can find “American” labs with big old noggins and stocky bodies too. I see the the distinction more come into play when folks are looking for a breeder…just my two cents!

DAY 9 – DOG-A-DAY – MEET “SAM”

MEET SAM

Sweet, Little Sam crossed the Rainbow bridge recently. He was a 13-year-old Yorkshire Terrier who at 12 ¬†“sturdy” lbs ¬†– was “husky” for a Yorkie!

His owner told me that despite his failing health, he held on long enough for his 3 college age “kids” to get home for Christmas…

I love dogs!!

“We used to say that¬†Sam¬†put the “terror” in terrier. Never were there more teen-age boys afraid of a 12lb dog, and he developed quite a reputation at my kids high school. His favorite activity was to ¬†chase from the kitchen to the stairway an assortment of strapping football and lacrosse players and swimmers. He never ever bit anyone but took great delight in making them run!

I think you can see the mischievous gleam in his eyes.”

Thank you for sharing Sam with me.

YORKIE!

5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YORKSHIRE TERRIERS

1.For its first few years, the Yorkshire Terrier breed was called the Broken Haired Scotch Terrier, Broken Haired Toy Terrier or simply Toy Terrier. By the 1970s, the name Yorkshire Terrier was adopted to honor the place where the breed began.

2. RANKS 6TH in Popularity in the US

3.Legendary actress Audrey Hepburn was famously attached to her Yorkshire Terrier, Mr. Famous. Lots of photos exist of Hepburn toting the dog around with her on studio lots, and he even¬†made an appearance in one of her most popular movies, “Funny Face.”

4. Judging by their bravery and boldness, Yorkies have no idea how small they are, or else they have the confidence not to let their diminutive size hold them back.

5. The Yorkie was created by working men of north England, who developed the breed for catching the terrible rats and mice that infested clothing mills and mine shafts.

~~~~~~~~~
What started out as a “wonder if i could do this..” kind of project has turned into so much more. I have received dozens and dozens of submissions, and the stories that go with the photos of each dog each are so wonderful. I always find it amazing how our pets bypass the nonsense and reveal our truest selves…for better or worse… I thank you sincerely for sharing your selves and your dogs with me.
“AMELIE OF THE WILD BUNCH”…
BEST NAME EVER!!!!
I JUST CALL HER SWEET ELLA.
SHE IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SETTER. I WANT TO LAY DOWN NEXT TO HER AND TAKE A NAP.
“ELLA” – SOLD
5 FUN FACTS ABOUT SETTERS
  1. The English Setter¬†dog breed¬†was named for its practice of ‚Äúsetting,‚ÄĚ or crouching low, when it found birds so the hunter could throw his net over them.
  2. English setters are very sociable dogs. They enjoy being with both people and other dogs.
  3. The English setter is an intensely friendly dog. He does not do well banished to the backyard or to a doghouse.
  4. The color of the coat can be white with overlay markings of different colors like; Blue belton (white with black), Orange belton (white with orange), Lemon belton (white with lemon), Liver belton(white with liver), or tricolor (blue or liver belton with tan markings) etc.
  5. Great with kids!!! But not apartment dogs…need lots of exercise.
I LOVE SetteRS!!!!! My Mom used to breed Irish and English setters when I was a kid. I LOVED having the puppies around…sooooooooo soft!!!!
