THE UNION JACK DRESSER (take two)

The running joke around here is that
“Mom is the only NON Italian in the family”
Ha, Ha, LOL, very funny.
My husbands’ family is 100% Italian,
THUS my children are 50% Italian
and me…
…well my maiden name was
“SMITH”…
and according to the family tree….
“I’m British”!
(at least a little!)
These photos below were from
but I think they originated someplace else…
didn’t we all?!!!!
!
In honor of MY heritage
and because I think this look is THE BOMB!!!
I  tackled a project
I had been contemplating for a while……
The UNION JACK DRESSER MAKEOVER!
I am not sure of what prompted the Union Jack Fever….
One article I read said that
“Union Jack is the New Black!”

The Olympics in London. The new Princess. The awesome edginess of London decor…?

PURE HOME
….THIS DRESSER was designed is by
the fantastic interior designer Betsy Burnham
and is from her teenage daughter’s room …

so perfectly perfect and shiny!
random fact…
(it is actually signed by the actress amanda bynes…in better days)
THE MAKEOVER
…….It was an easy makeover, as far as makeovers go…
time-consuming?
Yes, difficult? NO. ….yes, lots of taping and
fixing little bleed through,
and RE-taping…etc., etc., etc..
…but OH SO worth the time!!!
caliente, cloud nine and mysetrious

The Benjamin Moore paint colors I chose – caliente, cloud nine and mysterious

TOOLs and supplies :
1. Painters tape – in 3 widths –  1″2″ AND 2.5″
2. PAINT- I USED Benjamin Moore CalienteMysterious and Cloud Nine White
3. Ruler and Measuring Tape for curved places
4. Scissors and razor cutter for trimming tape
5. Level to keep it straight
6. A protractor might have been helpful for the angles. Oh well….Live and learn.

this is the Before view…the dresser
(the gray one at the end of the hall with the red arrow pointing to it)
BORING GRAY DRESSER

BORING GRAY DRESSER.

STEP 1: Taping
IMG_9887 …there are many ways to go about this,
depending upon which color you want to paint the
entire dresser
or at least the front first.
I went with BENJAMIN MOORE “Cloud Nine White” first

CLOUD NINE WHITE

CLOUD NINE WHITE.

I noticed in my research that many people do not do the correct “authentic” proportions.
THE PROPORTIONS are important as at closer inspection the “X” is not symmetrical.
I found this link which was sooooo helpful!

turns out MY dresser is kind of a square!
all good.. a “make it work” moment.

STEP 2 PAINTING:
I then painted inside the boxes, BENJAMIN MOORE’S “Caliente Red”
AND “Mysterious”
MYSTERIOUS

MYSTERIOUS

and then took off the tape.
STEP 3:  CLEAN UP: TEDIOUS, BUT WELL WORTH THE TIME  CLEANING UP of all the bleed throughs no matter how hard I tried to prevent them
(i Have since this makeover found “FROG TAPE” to be better with bleed through.)

I had to touch up little areas where bleeds came through.
but finally, FINALLY I finished!!!!
STEP 4 – DISTRESS IT:
THIS is usually my favorite part where you get to now “shabby up” the thing you just meticulously tried to get perfect…to make it look aged….and
this dresser is already pretty
aged and distressed
 so
I followed its lead and further distressed it.
I then put a coat of clear FINISHING wax on it,
……polished it up and here she goes!
THE REVEAL

I get these “Keep Calm and Carry” items as gifts,
DO you think people are trying to tell me something?

Now the view down to the end of the hall is
anything BUT Blah!
…so there you have it!
SINCE THE ORIGINAL PUBLISHING OF “THe UNION JACK DRESSER MAKEOVER” THE UPSTAIRS HALLWAY  HAS UNDERGONE A HUGE MAKEOVER…NEW CEILINGS, LIGHTING  AND NEW RUGS…
IN SHORT……A WHOLE NEW LOOK…
….
 But my Union Jack still
“KEEPS CALM AND CARRYS ON”!
KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON!
