My 10 FAVORITE PALE GRAYS

“Is it GRAY or GREY?”

This is one of the most commonly asked questions regarding common spelling mistakes!

The answer is :  if you are American it is likely you spell it “GRAY”…..AND  “GREY” is used in Great Britain and areas that use UK English.

Both are correct and both are Beautiful.

I LOVED PALE GRAY long BEFORE IT WAS TRENDY….And I will likely love it long after it becomes…”The color of the Twenty- teens”. It soothes me…and I am hard pressed to think of a single color it does NOT flatter…like a good friend…this peaceful shade brings out the best in any tint…black, blue, pink, yellow, green, red and orange…the ultimate cheerleader…PALE GRAYS…are wonderful!!

    1. Thanks for the heads up…and for connecting the photo to the correct source! On Pinterest it is listed as “Bunny Gray”…i have relabeled the photo…xo

  1. AH Thank You! I have been looking for the perfect gray color for almost a year. I have so many swatches I am losing my mind!

  2. Hey Lesli! I’m Amanda’s sister in law. I’m in search of a fabulous gray and Gay sent me to your site. Looking forward to testing some of your favorites. Also, I think I need a puppy painting of our dog. LOVE the one you did of Nora 🙂

    1. Hi tricia,

so happy you stopped by! feel free to email me (lsdevito@gmail.com) too if you need help with choosing a gray. Best of luck to you! and I will paint your puppy whenever you are ready!

      xo

  3. Hi Leslie,
Found your site and cant decide among Horizon, Moonshine, and Wickham Gray for a small powder room with no natural light. Horizon looks so light but Im afraid Wickham will be too dark. Any advice as to tge colors would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Carol

    1. Horizon is definitely the lightest, but I have found, after years of hit or miss with dark rooms and with rooms that get little light – that it is better to add GOOD lighting than to try to get the wall color to compensate. Does this make sense? In fact sometimes darker colors, with good lighting can brighten a space better than pale light which in bad lighting can look like a person who needs a tan.

All three are great grays and I would say go with the one you like the most…and check out some nice sconces that will maybe add some brighter light to the room…

  4. We painted our spare room paper white and the bathroom owl gray. They are beautiful! The hallway we painted Swiss coffee which goes beautifully with the grays. I’m definitely a Benjamin Moore fan!

  5. I’m agonizing over gray colors to repaint my toddler daughter’s room. It is a small room and is currently Moonshine with Simply White trim (left over from when it was my older son’s room). The green undertone in Moonshine is driving me nuts (it is the little things ) and I want something lighter that will go well with pink, creams and whites. I’m considering Paper White or maybe Gray Owl at 50%. Any advice? Thank you!

  6. This post is so helpful thank you! I am trying to pick a grey for our nursery (baby boy on the way). The room is smallish but has high ceilings and gets good natural light. Right now with the big window and high ceilings the white paint is making it feel very stark. I want to warm things up a bit while still having it feel neutral and peaceful. I have been gravitating toward (what I think are) pale blue-ish greys from Benjamin Moore like Bunny Gray, Iced Cube Silver, Gray Cloud or Marilyn’s Dress – but I don’t want it to end up looking TOO blue. Any thoughts greatly appreciated!!

    1. Hi Hannah,

Congrats on the new baby! If I were doing Nursery I would want to keep the walls light and soft…once all the baby stuff gets in there you will amazed at how busy a place it becomes. The color I recommend is “Horizon” . I have used it a few times and currently it is in my sons room. http://myoldcountryhouse.com/orc-final-reveal-teen-boy-room/At first I worried it would be too light, but when I finished it was perfect! All of those other ones you list will bee too gray and too dark. They look perfect on the card but translate much darker on the wall. What I have learned is that if you want a color to look very light on he wall…it needs to almost look TOO light” on the card. I hope this helps!!!

  7. Hi I am looking for an almost white/grey for my master bedroom. I have an upholstered bed in linen, and I love lots of color in my bedding and accessories so I really need a light neutral grey. Not green, not blue, not icy, just pretty pale grey! I did revere pewter which I loved in my hallways and hate it! Looks khaki in my bedroom. So I’m having repainted but I cant mess up again! Any recommedations? Thanks!

  8. Hi, I am having my north facing foyer (has high ceiling and large windows) painted. Felt Revere Pewter was too beige. I like Gray Cloud and Bunny Gray but afraid both might look too blue at times. Can you recommend a pale but noticeable and crisp gray? There will be a white trim. Thanks so much.

  9. OMG. MY HUSBAND is going crazy with me because I keep bringing home more shades and just when I have it figured out, the right one…. I change my mind. So far I’ve rejected Feather Gray as too dark & blue, Wickham Gray as um, boring. Thought I had it with of all things Marilyn’s Dress! (I think I want a high light reflection.) Then narrowed it down to two, Bunny Gray and Tundra. But then I read Tundra is really a white. Here’s the deal: We have bought our last house, a dream cottage on the beach in Owls Head, Maine. (Yes I was going to go with Gray Owl just to get it over but thought it had yellow undertones). It’s a tiny cottage, 1,000 sq ft but with enormous windows with the Penobscot Bay all around us on 3 sides. We are practically in the water, it is a huge vista of changing blues & greys. I thought I wanted a light dreamy gray to go with the white board ceilings my husband just installed but I always get scared of a too dark gray. Should I just stick with Bunny Gray? I’m off to get more samples now! Shoreline, Harbor Gray, Revere Pewter. I’m going crazy. I would so appreciate your thoughts!

  10. I’m a few years too late, but I just came across this and it was so helpful! Which white do you think would go with Horizon for the bottom half of a long entry hallway with a chair rail/molding (with “Horizon” as the color on the top half?)

  11. Annette
I am going a bit crazy locating a nice color to go in my kitchen with my oak cabinets. My friend said Bunny Gray would be perfect put once we painted a bit on the wall it looked blue. I was also thinking a little bit more of a gray but would that go with my oak cabinets. Looking at moonshine but don’t want green and mooshine maybe too dark, how about Misty Gray for a kitchen with Oak cabinets and grey and white countertops??
