I recently completed a 17th Birthday makeover of my Teenage daughter Phoebe’s bedroom.
Her room was WONDERFUL before, but kids grow and tastes change and she has ME for a mother! Phoebe wanted a bedroom that was lighter, calmer and quieter with lots of WHITE punctuated by GOLD with some pastel POPS of color…well, let’s just say..she had me at “GOLD”!
TEENAGERS’ lives GO in a million directions. It is a blessing for them have an inviting place to come home to at the end of their very intense days. There are certain “must haves”…YOU “MUST HAVE” A BED, and ample storage for all of their clothing and STUFF…and it helps to have a DESK or WORK AREA. There remain so many “Optional”s… a comfy chair, rugs, lighting and accessories.
DECORATING A BEDROOM TAKES CAREFUL PLANNING, SETTING A BUDGET AND TIME ALLOTMENT. I FOLLOW THE SAME STEPS FOR PLANNING ANY ROOM:
1. MAKE A “DREAM” LIST
THIS is a fun step… Phoebe knew she wanted White and Gold….and Wallpaper! We spent months collecting ideas, ordering samples and choosing the wallpaper. She also wanted to change from her twin beds to a double bed, perhaps an old spool bed and someplace for her kitty “GUS”.
ONE OF OUR FIRST “SCORES” WAS AN ANTIQUE SPOOL BED THAT A FRIEND FOUND FOR ME!
I HAVE BEEN looking for a spindle bed for years. YEARS. I was about to settle for one…KIND OF like what I wanted when friend spied one at an antique store and told me about it.
My patience paid off. It is exactly what I had envisioned. And my daughter will have it forever!
2. DO A MAJOR PURGE OF THINGS THAT NO LONGER FIT, WORK OR COMPLIMENT THE NEW ROOM
We spent days cleaning out her room, clearing out clutter and thinning the closet of clothing too small or just too “something” to keep! It is hard to think about NEW things when the old is staring you in the face and clogging your drawers and your creative mind!
3. TAKE INVENTORY OF WHAT YOU “HAVE” THAT CAN BE RECYCLED, UP-CYCLED, DIY-ED AND REPAINTED TO FIT INTO THE NEW COLOR SCHEME.
4. MAKE SURE TO CREATE PLACES FOR COLLECTING!
TEENAGERS are always making memories, collecting awards and photos and celebrating dances and milestones. It is important to have places to displace these precious moments and achievements!
5. SET A TIME FRAME AND DO A LITTLE AT A TIME.
THE LAST TIME I did a makeover of my daughter’s bedroom, I completed ALL of the work over a 3 day period while she was away on a 7th grade school field trip. The results were beautiful but the pressure of doing everything in such a condensed span of time did not leave much room for error! This time, I paced the work, doing one big PROJECT each week…for 6 weeks. I did wallpaper and painting one week, furniture makeovers the next…bedding and other accessories were purchased throughout as I watched for sales and specials. This pace took longer, but the process was much less stressful.
6. MAKE SURE THERE IS GOOD DESK OR “WORKSPACE”
TEENS spend countless hours studying and doing homework, writing college admissions essays and papers is a time consuming and stressful process. They also need privacy. Having a quiet organized place makes life just a little bit easier.
7. ADD PERSONAL TOUCHES
The best rooms reflect the inhabitant (s). I painted a surprise portrait of my daughter’s beloved kitty Gus as a birthday gift. The portrait hangs in a place of honor and though cats are not allowed in dorms, her painting will follow her to College one day.
8. A GOOD THING GOES A LONG WAY
We found this amazing blush color (BENJMAIN MOORE RALEIGH PEACH) and RE-painted her dresser. I sprayed the handles gold and the transformation was beautiful. The color was so beloved I was tempted to paint everything…but we stopped at one piece to make it more special!
9. STYLE – STYLE – STYLE – DON’T FORGET THE LITTLE THINGS….BOOKS, PHOTOS, USEFUL PLACES TO PUT JEWELRY AND MAKEUP….STYLING OF ANY ROOM IS THE ICING ON THE CAKE AND WHAT IS A CAKE WITHOUT FROSTING?
10. FINALLY – PULLING ALL OF THE PIECES TOGETHER!!!!
My FAVORITE PART IS THE DAY OF THE “INSTALL” WHEN ALL OF THE PIECES COME TOGETHER!
PHOEBE IS IN LOVE WITH HER NEW ROOM AND SO AM I.
