ONE ROOM CHALLENGE WEEK 5 – MY 5 FAVORITE ACCESSORIES !

HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT WE HAVE JUST ONE WEEK LEFT!!!

I am so happy you stopped by to see what I have been up to..it this was not “virtual” I would offer you a cup of coffee – or a glass of wine – sometimes I think about how awesome it would be if one day – you could teleport yourself like in Star Trek and actually GO TO the places you see online – then again – that could all get kind of scary….anyway – I am sincerely grateful hat you have come here!!!

WEEK 5

For this ORC Guest Participant Challenge I am tacking a very under-decorated Basement Family Room in a BEAUTIFUL new home belonging to a client. This wonderful family has brought 4 darling children into the world in 5 years which does not lend much time to decorating or sleeping…and I have LOVED creating beautiful LIVABLE DURABLE spaces throughout their home ver the last few years.

THE GOAL HERE was to create a room which could GROW with them – Give them seating and the ability to withstand the indoor-outdoor traffic of   a great room which opens to the outside.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE A RE-CAP, VISIT WEEK 1, 2, 3 AND 4

Before I talk about accessories, I am excited to report that the FURNITURE is IN!!!

The process was not without the usual surprises.

You may remember that I had 4 different deliveries scheduled  – 3 were drops offs of furniture and one was a pick-up. Day 1 went off without a hitch.

Day #2 starts off okay. Until 7am when I get a call from the delivery truck.  The driver told me that he is 10 minutes away!!!!

WHAT!!!!! NO!!!! He was supposed to meet me at the house at 11am! He is 4 hours early – and this is NOT MY HOUSE! We cannot arrive as toddlers are waking up and parents are getting ready for work. I think fast and decide to RE-ROUTE the driver to MY HOUSE. I live 5 miles from the client.  We will figure something out. Thankfully , My DEAR husband helped me take everything over in shifts…what a HUGE HELP! And the crisis of the early morning home invasion was averted!!!!

PHEW! The rest of the week was smooth sailing!

THIS WEEK IS ALL ABOUT ACCESSORIES

I LOVE ACCESSORIES AND STYLING!

My favorite part of decorating is ART AND those finishing (PERSONAL) touches that MAKE a room THE ACCESSORIES – . The finishing touches are quite often things that you would NOT miss…if they were not there, like a Lamp or a CHAIR….BUT when they ARE there…the ROOM COMES ALIVE and you get a feel for who lives there.

BOYS ROOM in the 2015 Southern Living Idea House – the little finishing touches introduce you to the by who lives here!

I have a little CHECKLIST of INGREDIENTS that MAKE A HOUSE FEEL LIKE A HOME.

MY 5 FAVORITE ACCESSORIES

I like to LAYER accessories, in my clothes and in my rooms – naturally, so they all make sense. There are all kinds of “rules” out there that I will not get into, I tend to let my eye be the judge. If it flows and feels comfortable and functional – it works for me.

For the purposes of this list I am sticking to accessories which go on surfaces…but not things like Mirrors and ART which are an entity all to themselves.

  1. BOOKS – BOOKS ARE THE BEST! Books are a colorful and practical to accessorize a room. Books that reflect the topics you LOVE are a great way to personalize a space. There a MILLIONS of possibilities….my personal go-to books are Design and ART books. And DOG books!!!  Of course…you may end up needing a whole bookcase to house them – like I have …but books really  are a great a relatively inexpensive and sometimes FREE way to layer your decor.

 2. PHOTOS – Tastefully framed , I have a soft spot of framed black and white photos…large and small together…just NOT so many that you cannot access the resting surface. I am kind of nuts about these ACRYLIC frames at Crate and Barrell!!!

CRATE AND BARREL ARYLIC FRAMES ….my current faves!!!

3. NATURE – Flowers, feathers, pine cones, coral, crystals, a deer horn, a porcupine quill, things found in Nature that add a layer of earthiness.

A LAYERED HOUSE
AMERICA’S OTHER AUDUBON NEST LITHOGRAPHS FRAMED – I actually repainting this dresser “Ashley Gray” but never posted photos. it was right before Christmas when company was coming and I was having my own version of a one hour makeover show trying to pull this place together!!
HOUSE AND HOME
FOR THE LOVE OF A HOUSE MASTER BEDROOM. By the way this house has given me untold inspiration. It is a beautiful example of neutrals used throughout -paired with natural materials, organic accessories and simple styling. I love her use of wood throughout and the way the neutral colors move through the house and play in the light . It is a must read of you love old homes and natural beauty!

4. Trays, Bowls and little dishes

UPSTAIRS LOOKING DOWNSTAIRS

I would not necessarily put ALL of these accessories together but JONATHAN ADLER is a goldmine when it comes to great accessories – a little goes a long way!!!!

GORGEOUS BLUE GRAY WALLS AND JONATHAN ADLER LIVING ROOM!

5. Pillows – pillows – PILLOWS– they are everywhere! my current favorite source is THE PILLOW COLLECTION . Started by identical twin brothers, the Pillow Collection is to Pillow what Warby Parker is to glasses – the have made getting affordable, gorgeous pillows easy and accessible. The fabric choices are vast and the quality consistent and good.

DECORATE WITH PILLOWS FOR A POP OF HAPPY!
PATCHWORK PUP PILLOWS FOR ANTHROPOLOGIE

THE TRICK with accessories is not to go overboard and accumulate clutter. My friend the fashionista says the rule of thumb is you get all ready and then take ONE accessory OFF. You can do the same with your room. Simple is best, or at the very least – give yourself room to grow and collect.

VINTAGE

VINTAGE ACCESSORIES ARE A WIN-WIN

One additional note. Within the 5 items listed above and any you arrive at yourself – try to find something vintage – with a history – a past and a story. ALL NEW is not real and ALL OLD can be a bit oppressive but mixing the OLD WITH THE NEW is FANTABULOUS!!!!

Okay one last thing to share before next week when READY OR NOT the room will be REVEALED.

RECLINER VS CHAIR AND OTTOMAN

I asked the man of the house if there was anything he would like specifically in his newly decorated BASEMENT FAMILY ROOM.

He said “A CHAIR, just give me a chair”.

So I set out to find him a GREAT CHAIR!!! I looked at so many options, both chairs with ottomans and recliners. Eventually I decided to go with a leather recliner : the room already has 2 small ottomans and 2 chairs and 2 sofas. Lots of pieces. In addition –  The kids also have these little recliners with their names monogrammed on the backs which I know would be migrating down to the family room so ONE multipurpose classy recliner made much more sense. THIS DAD needs a recliner!!!!

And because I had removed all the leather furniture  – I wanted a nice soft durable beautiful leather recliner.

Here are some A FEW of my choices…

LEATHER RECLINERS – SO MANY DECISIONS AND OH SO COMFY!!!

NEXT WEEK IS THE BIG REVEAL! I am so excited and I thank you sincerely for following along each week. I am so excited to see what everyone does! I know my head will be spinning with ideas and perhaps a little healthy ROOM ENVY…

  1. Ok I think we must be design accessory twinsies, everything you listed are my favorite accessories too! I’m obsessed with pillows (seriously I have tons on the sofas and a storage space for rotational pillows), vintage books (my fave topics are literature, dogs and art), acrylic or clear glass frames, antlers and I always have at least a tray (if more room available) a couple of bowls and fresh flowers. Lovely post and looking forward to your final reveal!
