ONE WEEK – BUT WHO’S COUNTING?

I CANNOT HELP IT.

I started counting down the days…19 years ago….and now…here we are…one week left…

I love how they call it “MOVE IN “Day….

TATE
TATE

But despite my procrastination and flat-out Denial …( my husband just texted me “Does Tate need a Physical?”)…it IS happening…T minus 7 days…and counting.

I KNOW YOU WILL forgive me if I am remiss about BLOG posting …besides, my house is a  disaster, nothing to see here folks….and I cannot be bothered unpacking…maybe I will just live out of this suitcase….get rid of the dressers…you know, downsize…simplify…I promise to make up for it when the kids are back in school…after Tate “MOVES IN”…

One SYMPTOM of this  impending transition that I would like to ask you about…Is it normal to sometimes feel terribly confused…like I am truly unsure of what I am supposed to do next???

I wish I were back at the beach.

  1. You are sooooo normal! It has been a year since my youngest left for college and I am STILL confused!! It has to get better, right?? 🙂

  2. Hi Leslie. I feel your pain– my daughter leaves in 15 days, 11 hours, 15 minutes and three seconds!! She is off to New Hampshire over six hours from home! I have bought so much stuff for her dorm that I can’t walk in my dining room—and every day I go out and find ” one more thing”. Normal? I don’t think there is a normal when you send your first off to college! Good luck and let us know how it all goes!!!

    1. aw Mary…Your dining room sounds like me sleeping porch…and I can only imagine how I will be with Phoebe…truly cannot think about it…we WILL get through this…but IT WILL be rough sailing…thank goodness we all have each other!!!

  3. It gets better….much better. They arrive home at Thanksgiving with laundry in tow…lots of laundry. Twenty seconds after walking in the door it’s as if they never left. That’s when my husband and I gave each other ‘the look’ that asked, ‘When do they go back?’ Oh yeah…it will be the quickest four years of your lives. Before you know it all of their college ‘stuff’ will be sitting in your driveway and you will be wondering where on earth you are going to put it, lol! Good luck to all of the new college students….what an adventure lies ahead!

  4. We’ve had ‘Move In’ days with both daughter and son. It’s very confusing as it’s really ‘move out’ day for us mothers. We noticed when both kids left, a new dynamic created with their siblings. We definitely saw new bits of the younger kids personality being able to exert themselves without the older siblings around. Wishing you well – letting go of an era is Hard Work!

  5. My son will start his 3rd year at UVA this month. I admit we still count the days to his departure after summer break. This summer has been spent painting and refinishing furniture and gathering items for the house he will live in this year with friends. Although he may not be looking too forward to his difficult studies ahead, he is very excited to return to Charlottesville and UVA life. That makes us very happy! I will never forget his first year “moving in” to his dorm (with no air conditioning, I might add!) and our returning home without him. He is only 45 minutes away but It is beyond difficult to explain the great loss I felt dropping my first baby off at college and it brings me to tears whenever I think about it (ridiculous, I know). Believe me, the very first time your son leaves for college is the most difficult. It does get so much easier each time he visits and returns to school, and be assured that you won’t feel this kind of confusion and pain when he leaves again next August. The personal growth you will see in him each time he comes home, and particularly when he invites his new friends to come with him, will be fascinating to witness and you will be so proud of the smart and confident young man you have raised. A new and exciting world awaits all of you (and thank goodness for cell phones, texting and emails when you have a child in college). Good luck!!

  6. I’ve only been out of college for 5 years so I can’t speak as a parent, but my mom still talks about the first Sunday at home after dropping me off my freshman year. I’m the youngest, so I’m the one guilty of causing the empty nest! She said she stood in the middle of the kitchen and just noticed how quiet the house was, looked at my dad and said, “I don’t know what to do”. I can’t imagine how proud and sad it must be to send off your kiddos, but know that my brother and now I call our parents every day on our drive home from work, so you have more close years ahead of you!

  7. I “moved in” my son last Saturday! I can say that this has been the longest week of my life! He’s doing ok, questioning his decision to play football this season along with starting college. He is my only child and I have definitely felt that my job (being his mom) has come to a screeching halt. But, I know that this is what I spent the last 18 years doing…preparing him to leave the nest. He’s ready and I will be ok. Lesli, I am following your advice about “the next thing”. You can do this!
