AND MY VERY FAVORITE – THE ONE I WATCH AT LEAST 5 TIMES EACH CHRISTMAS …..

THE FAMILY STONE

THE FAMILY STONE
THE FAMILY STONE

THIS ONE IS MY FAVORITE – I cannot explain exactly why. IT rarely if ever makes any “TOP-TEN” lists….I have actually seen it make some “worst movies lists..” . But, whatever,  I love this movie. Maybe I love it because the first time I saw it was the year my Mom died. It hit home. BIG TIME. It grabs my heart and it connects me to all the things Christmas means to me…

LOVE, FAMILY, CRAZINESS, ROMANCE, LOSS and SURPRISES. and did I mention FAMILY!

THE FAMILY STONE
THE FAMILY STONE

Yes, I know the “true meaning” of Christmas and I ABSOLUTELY ADORE A WONDERFUL LIFE and with the kids we watched RUDOLPH, FROSTY, THE GRINCH AND MICKEYS “ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS “ so many times that they came to define that period in our life…the “Rudolph” years..and I will never be able to part with the tapes..yes TAPES! Videos…old days.

This is the thing about Christmas movies. They are constant. Some are over 70 years old! Yet they stay the same…year after year, as we change, and grow and grow up and move and age and lose people and have babies…they are the same…and when we check back in with them…when we sit down once a year to watch them…they are a barometer of who we are and what we were and where we are going.

OUR FAMILY FAVORITE IS ELF...BUT THE KID’S FAVORITE FOR A VERY VERY LONG TIME WAS

MICKEY’S ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS

I am a very visual and auditory person. A piece of music can and WILL  take a “put-together” me and plummet me to tears. (my Dad’s funeral for example) … MOVIES AND MUSIC, DANCE AND ART –  … connect below…MY BRAIN – and THEY touch my heart.

I am eternally grateful for CHRISTMAS movies. They are so much of what Christmas is to me.

REPEAT THE SOUNDING JOY!

  1. My favorite is Christmas in Connecticut – followed extremely closely by The Family Stone. Christmas in Connecticut is so charming…I adore Uncle Felix…the horse-drawn sleighs…the romance… I love everything about it! As for The Family Stone, it just feels real. The cast and the performances and the sibling relationships are so rich and wonderful. They tackle some tough stuff yet do it with a light hand and a big heart. It has JUST started snowing here in Portland, Oregon. Cold east winds out of the Columbia River Gorge are blowing the snow sideways against the huge fir trees, rooftops and roads have a light coating of snow, and skies are gray at 2 pm. Schools just released the kids early, eggs were in short supply at Safeway, businesses are closing down. I have kettle corn, two sleepy dogs from an earlier walk, a good fire going, a plan for dinner, and work that can wait. It sounds like movie time to me! On deck: The Family Stone. Thanks for the inspiration, Lesli!

  2. I discovered Millions by director Danny Boyle, about 4 or 5 years ago — fell in love with it and now watch it every year. It is funny and touching and thought-provoking.
