We painted all of the cabinets, installed new appliances (except the like new avocado double oven) and hardware and this is essentially how the kitchen has looked over the last 6 years. I paint it a different color when the spirit moves me, and it moves me a lot! A gut renovation would be my choice but is not in the current deck of cards. Instead, I am researching having the cabinet and drawer fronts replaced, upgrade the floors and countertops and then eventually take the way down between the kitchen and dining room.
