MONDAY MAKEOVER – THE BOYS ROOM

PHOEBE AND COOPER 2005
PHOEBE AND COOPER 2005

Yesterday we took a trip back in time and saw the BOYS room and how it has transformed over the years…from the bedroom of a couple of little boys to the Bedroom of two teens…

……..a couple of Fridays ago we had a snow day...and it was just that PUSH I needed to attack the areas of the BOY’S room that had driven me crazy…simple fixes really….that I just could never seem to get round to doing…you know sometimes I think those simple fixes are much harder to carry out than the BIG JOBS!

AREAS OF ATTACK

1. Tate’s bed, was an old queen frame with a lumpy mattress that needed to be swapped out with a nice full size Pottery Barn bed with a great mattress which was in our back room…. because one side of the side rail had broken.

SOLUTION:

BED – I found these brackets at the hardware store.

They enabled me to attach the side rail (albeit a bit more permanently) and support the mattress and box spring great. Time of fix – 30 minutes ..and Tate has a great NEW bed!

I love the colors of the boys room…

BENJAMIN MOORE COLORS: POOLSIDE,STONINGTON GREY, MOUNTAIN PEAK WHITE AND CARROT

…they work in a cluttered space and complement all of the incidental colors that come and go from the room

2. Their rug, while fully functional, their rug was blah and ugly and just needed some help.

SOLUTION:

RUG – One day while at Lowes I wandered back to their flooring aisle and checked out the bound berber carpet rugs which are in my opinion a TOTAL steal. I got this bound, 9″ x 13″  soft grey rug for $79!!! DONE

3. Tate’s main dresser was the one I got as a changing table/dresser from my old NYC roommate …when I was expecting Tate …..18 years ago…and needless to say it had gotten MUCH too small and the drawers kept falling through.

SOLUTION:

OKAY STAY WITH ME HERE– We pulled the old SWITCH-A-ROO….we gave Tate Damon’s very nice pine dresser…Damon got Gram’s old dresser…which is a great Mid Century High boy and had been hiding out in my closet….I got the minty green one that used to be in the hall in my closet and Tate’s baby dresser is currently in the back room.

4. TATE’S DESK

Tate’s desk, WAS  NEVER used on the other side of the room…other than as a catch all for clothing..I LOVED HOW IT LOOKED BUT IT WAS IMPRACTICAL AND A SPACE WASTER.

SOLUTION:

WE put the desk next to his bed….

TAKEAWAY MESSAGE – Quite often, the easiest and cheapest and most satisfying and life changing fixes are merely the matter of a little imagination…and compromise….Moving furniture from room to room…giving up the idea of something that LOOKS GREAT but is completely useless….SUPER quick fixes…and retiring pieces which have seen better days. When we get so attached to WHAT WAS we do not leave much room for WHAT CAN BE!!!

  1. Grandpa’s shoes under Cooper’s bed made me smile. My son wears his Grandpa’s for every dress up occasion even though I suspect they are at least size too small now. Thanks for the sweet treat!

  2. I found you today from My Sweet Savannah. I’m so awed by your portrait of her Harley. It’s beautiful. I also have a Harley who died in October after 14 wonderful years with me. I’d treasure a portrait of him and am crossing my fingers, hoping to win. You have such talent.

  3. Your blog is beautiful! I love color too! Need to get braver as Melaine said. Your pet portraits are fab, they are colorful and happy, as it should be with our pets. I would treasure having one, my dogie us going on 12 so it’s time to have an official portrait of her that will capture her for years to come. 🙂

  4. Love the simple changes that made such a big impact! 🙂

And I’ve decided I MUST get a pet so I can have his portrait painted. 🙂

  5. I saw your painting of Harley on my sweet Savannah’s site. Loved the painting and was happy to find your site. I will bookmark your blog now as I love your use of color in your home and want to see more!

  6. Great redo and compromises and yep, love his grandpa’s shoes under the bed. But furniture aside, tell me about that lovely navy pompom duvet cover on Tate’s bed – love, love it!

  7. The boys’ room looks great. I found you from My Sweet Savannah’s site too. That was so kind of you to do a painting of her dog, Harley.
    Now following you.

  8. Beautiful blog, came here from ~Melaines~ blog, you spelled it Melanie, didn’t know if you knew the difference…she is so sweet and would never correct, but I thought I would just let you know. Your blog is fabulous and I’m off to check it out, so glad she sent me here! Your paintings are marvelous and I will keep you in mind for sure when we are ready to do our special little pooch..
