IS YELLOW THE NEW NEUTRAL?
Let me start by saying that DO NOT KNOW the answer to this question.
BUT – This is what I DO KNOW:
- You guys LOVE yellow
- Yellow works with almost any other color.
- It is easier to find the WRONG YELLOW – than the RIGHT YELLOW.
- Yellow is never going away.
- YELLOW makes us happy
YOU LOVE YELLOW
My Blog Post THE BEST INTERIOR YELLOWS AND YELLOWS NOT CALLED”YELLOW” and YELLOW MISHAPS AND THE BEST INTERIOR YELLOWS are far and away my MOST READ blog posts garnering close to a million pins and re pins. Thats alot of love! You guys are nuts about yellows.
Here is my theory. Color and what is “IN” and “On trend” and “Hot” etc etc seems to be always in flux…or what is being the HOT color, isn’t even really a color, but WHITE, which while I LOVE a beautiful white room…especially as a perfect backdrop to other colors…is a bit devoid of color.
YELLOW WORKS WITH ALMOST ANY OTHER COLOR
YELLOW AND BLUE
YELLOW AND GREEN
Since green is a by-product of yellow+blue, there is an ease about this combination. It feels very natural and symbiotic.
YELLOW AND RED
YELLOW AND BLACK
YELLOW AND PINK

IT IS EASIER TO FIND THE WRONG YELLOW THAN THE RIGHT YELLOW.
It is important when choosing a yellow paint color, to test it on your walls. Yellow is highly susceptible to the changes that occur with light. There are warmer yellows which lean toward gold and yellows with bright lemon undertones. One HUGE discovery I made the hard way was that many of the pale yellows are actually NOT CALLED YELLOW!!!
YELLOW IS HERE TO STAY
IN 2010, The Dining room walls at Thomas Jeffersons Virginai Estate, MONTICELLO, were taken back to their original color (that is over 200 years ago by the way – and the color, formulated by Ralph Lauren paints is named CHROME YELLOW.
“Monticello’s bright Dining Room is the centerpiece of newly transformed spaces being unveiled this June. The most noticeable change to the Dining Room is the color if its walls―from the much-copied Wedgwood blue to a brilliant chrome yellow. Extensive research by paint experts indicated that Jefferson chose the lively yellow for the Dining Room around 1815. Not only was it one of the most fashionable colors of the time, but it was also one of the most expensive. …. This comprehensive repainting and refurnishing of the Dining Room provides visitors with fresh insights into Monticello’s domestic life and Jefferson’s much celebrated ingenuity and taste.”
For as long as there is a sun in the sky…we will be drawn to the happy, comforting and joyful properties of yellow..in our decor and in our clothing and the accessories of life. We will surround ourselves with it , knowing that it makes us smile .
YELLOW MAKES US HAPPY!
