MONDAY MAKEOVER

I have finally chosen the LIVING ROOM COLOR.

SHERWIN WILLIAMS SEA SALT
SHERWIN WILLIAMS SEA SALT

…AT FIRST GLANCE..you may think it is similar to Palladian blue…

PALLADIAN BLUE
PALLADIAN BLUE

….but the closest BM color was GREEN TINT….

BEN MOORE GREEN TINT
BEN MOORE GREEN TINT

You know that my heart belongs to Ben…Moore that us..and honestly, I tried to find a Benjamin Moore color that worked as well…spent dollars and hours on samples and color matches…but this color just completely stole my heart. I even had my guy color match it in Benjamin Moore Pearl finish which is the finish I use…and it was just not the same.

SEA SALT HOUZZ
SEA SALT HOUZZ

I actually found whole blog threads where folks have discussed the impossibility of getting a perfect match with this color…whatever the case…I bought a gallon of Sherwin Williams Cashmere paint in Pearl Finish to do the room. (if you go HERE you can get a 30% off coupon OFF PAINT and 15% OFF OF SUPPLIES)

TO SAVE a little money, I am using the two sample quarts of SEA SALT… – one from SW and one from BM –  as the first coat…(BTW- I am completely loving the Sherwin Williams Quart jugs….

SW" TRY IT ON" JUGS
SW” TRY IT ON” JUGS

(BM needs to do something like this..you cannot see in the above photo but these containers have a handy handle on one side…like a milk jug..which make them easy to hold and use when cutting in and using a brush)

…LOOKS GOOD NEXT TO DARK…AND NEXT TO LIGHT…

….THE final quality which sold me on SEA SALT is it’s ability to remain neutral…

BENJAMIN MOORE SEA SALT FLIKR
HOUZZ – BENJAMIN MOORE SEA SALT FLIKR

…I fell in love with the chameleon characteristics of SEA SALT…it looks different in every photo and in all lighting and depending upon what color is accompanying it…

IN SOME LIGHT IT IS BLUE…OTHERS GREEN..AND OTHER LIGHT GRAY….

WHATEVER color I chose…it needed to do double and in some way…conflicting duty…ACT AS A NEUTRAL AND ADD COLOR…..In ALL light, SEA SALT it is soothing and peaceful and complementary …and it does not compete for attention making it a perfect neutral…

TRIM COLOR

chantilly lace

I am PAINTING all of the trim in CHANTILLY LACE…which is a lovely non yellow, non blue –  TRUE white – just soft pretty white which will act as a crisp contrast to the SEA SALT…I love how JENNY FROM LITTLE GREEN NOTEBOOK used in with a similar color BENJMAIN MOORE “ALUMINUM” in her library

LITTLE GREEN NOTE LIBRARY WITH CHANTILLY LACE TRIM
LITTLE GREEN NOTE LIBRARY WITH CHANTILLY LACE TRIM ..SHE DESCRIBES IT “

JENNY SAYS: “It’s one of my favorite whites to use because it reads as a true white. There are no gray undertones like White Dove has and no blue undertones like a pure white usually gives off. Simply White is another favorite, but it’s a little more yellow than Chantilly Lace.”….

SO…I HAVE MY COLOR AND MY PAINT…PLUS MY TRIM PAINT…AND MY SUPPLIES…AND A SICK PUPPY so I will be doing that living room this week and reveal the new color next monday!!! Thanks for all of your suggestions…I forgot to take a picture of all of the samples on the walls..like a speckled cheetah wall!!!

  1. Just used this color in a bedroom! Love it- calm and soothing.
Charlie will love hanging out in there when it’s finished! So happy to hear he’s feeling better and slowly but surely recovering.
    Happy painting!

  2. Love Farrow and Ball colours. I just used Pavilion in my living room and am so happy with it. I have used many of their colours and have always been so terribly satisfied with the results.

    Good Luck, lovely colour.

  3. Sea salt is one of my favorite colors but have not used it yet. You’re so right in that it works beautifully with everything and is perfect as a neutral. I can’t wait to use it and look forward to your living room. Sweet Charlie will be by your side and we are so happy about that.

  4. I used to be a Ben Moore girl, but have recently switched to Sherwin Williams. Their colours have been updated and are great. I’ve used Sea Salt and it rocks! Great choice – you will love it! I also use Chantilly White, but have Sherwin Williams match it. 🙂

  5. It looks as if you used a contrasting taupe on the playroom that is divided by a knee wall. What color is used on that knee wall? I am looking to do something similar in my stairwell leading to a loft, but do not like the accessible beige too much that they have as a matching color.
    Thanks!

  6. I am a little confused. Did you end up painting your room with Benjamin Moore Sea Salt, which is not a match for Sherwin William’s Sea Salt? Just curious, as it is on my radar to use in one of my rooms. It looks beautiful whatever you chose.

    1. BOTH!!! The room is painted Sherwinn Williams Sea Salt, but I had them make color match it and it up in Benjamin Moore paint. I love both paint manufacturers for different reasons and actually just used SW Steamed Milk for most of my downstairs except the was salt room!!!

  7. Hi. I am a little confused. Did you color match Sherwin William’s Sea Salt, or go with a different shade of Benjamin Moore paint with the same name Sea Salt? It looks beautiful!

  8. I’m confused….you were talking about Sea Salt but then ending up saying you bought a gallon of cashmere. What color did you end up deciding on? I have sea salt in a bedroom in my house and am trying to decide between that or BM Palladian blue for a bathroom.

      1. Hi, Thank you so much for replying, BM has been available here since September 2015,, , it is very kind of you to let me have the formula, I will ask Helen who works for the supplier if they are able to do this, kind regards Marj

      2. Hi, Thank you so much for replying, BM has been available here since September 2015,, , it is very kind of you to let me have the formula, I will ask Helen who works for the supplier if they are able to do this, once again thank you. kind regards Marj

  9. Does the SW sea salt color ever look mint green or baby blue? I’m considering it for a beach condo But do not want either of those colors.

  10. Hi, I’m about to paint my dining room sea salt.. My question is where did you get your curtains in your dining room and what color are they?

  11. I am planning to use sea salt in my new home. My kitchen and living room is one big open area. I think I will do see salt in all areas but the bedrooms. What color should I coordinate with for my bedrooms? Should I do the master suite a different color from the kids’ room? Should I use seas salt in kids rooms also? I only want to use two colors in the entire house as far as walls go.

    1. I would take a look at Sherwinn Williams “steamed Milk” which looks really nice with sea salt. also there is a darker color “Retreat” or “Oyster Bay… if you want to go darker in a room. I also like the blush colors with sea salt. I would look for something lighter for the kids room like the steamed milk. Kids stuff has so much color.

  12. I love your home! Your colors choices and decor are amazing! I am trying desperately to get my kitchen color nailed down. I tried Sea Salt, but it appears very baby blue when I put two samples together in the corners. (to mimic it reflecting off each other.) We have special protective glass in our French doors–which I regret everyday….but it seems to cast a green cast on everything. Is it possible that cancels out the green in the sea salt and makes it bluer? I am leaning toward SW Filmy green, which seems to end up giving me the color of sea salt. However, I wonder if I should go with a deeper color in a dimmer room? How does your room look at night?

  13. I really like how the Sea Salt changes color in your room. So very pretty.

I was trying to decide between SW Sea Salt and BM Gray Cashmere for our East facing, open plan, Kitchen/Den and sadly I chose the wrong one, Gray Cashmere. Both rooms now appear blue. A very light, baby blue. No green, no gray, just blue. I did all the correct things of painting a board and moving it around the room at different times of the day and consulting an interior decorator. Well, it is ONLY paint but will have to live with my poor choice for a bit until I can save to have it repainted or gasp, try repainting myself.

    1. Aw Dawn, I SO feel your pain as I have “been there-done that”. One question – Is “Gray Cashmere a SW color or a Benjamin Moore color? I couldnot find it at SW but did find it on BM.

No matter what – You are not alone, though I know those words do little to change the color of your walls. I have no real answers except to say one thing I have learned is that for a color to be subtle – it must almost look colorless and pale in the can. The “sea salt” is almost colorless until you put it on. When you paint multiple walls – the intensity is multiplied.
Good luck, it may be worth a day to just re-paint if it drives you crazy. And if that is not an option, try styling the room to highlight the color maybe?

  14. I love the Sea Salt colour! I’m also painting an adjoining kitchen, hallway, bathroom and bedroom – help! I need some neutral colour suggestions. Its oak flooring and gray bathroom tiles – thank you

  15. Hello! Gorgeous home. I myself have Benjamin Moore’s Sea Salt on my dining room walls. It’s a small room. My dining room table and chairs are black. I have white wood mini blinds on the window. My question that I have is what color drapes to put in that room? I looked up the ones you suggested and the length is too short. Bummer. I need the length to be 95″ long. I am at lost. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  16. Wondering about a curtain colour that would go with sea salt. Linen? Or should I try to find a curtain colour to match the wall paint? Thank you

    1. That is the BEST part about Sea Salt. Is that it looks good with everything!!! Very much for the same reason sage is popular – it can look: gray, gray-green, gray-blue and pale blue – depending on the light. It really is a great color and I am glad you asked this because I was (out of boredom) contemplating changing it and now remember that I had that room so many colors before discovering sea salt and this color just works!
For curtains – ours are just cheapie (in the world of drapery that is) Martha Stewart at Home Depot ones, faux silk and they can go in the wash, but I have had pink ones in there and cream ones – perhaps – pull a color out of some patterned fabric you have in the room. Plain Belgian linen color is great – you can dress it up to feel fancy or go casual with a natural fiber ….have fun!
Thank you for this question , I think I will do a blog post JUST about this color and things that look go with it!!!!

  17. Hi, I am thinking of painting my living room sea salt but my curtains and sofa are a grey colour (silvery grey kinda dark) would sea salt look ok with that? I also have dark and light blues for cushions and accessories. Living room faces west. Thanks for any suggestions

    1. This is hard to answer without seeing it. But I do think Sea Salt is beautiful. It depends I guess on the “mood” you want to create. If you are wanting a quiet somber space – the gray on gray/blue might be nice. I am not an expert on which directions rooms face…but I know sea salt can go gray in darker light and pale seafoam in bright light. I would suggest getting a sample and painting a spot and seeing how the light does.

  18. I have painted my bathroom in SW sea salt which I love – unfortunately the tile and sink etc are almond which I dont love but can’t update right now, my question is what color should I use for the trim and door?

    1. Benjamin Moore Chantilly lace. the biggest mistake I find people make with almond fixtures is to try to “match them” – I say go for a crisp clear white – will look great with teh sea salt. Thanks for stopping by!

  19. Looks great! Did you use flat or satin? Trying to decide which to use…
Hope your golden baby is feeling better soon!! We had our sweet Golden for 12.5 years, she was the best!
