TATE is away for much of the summer, working in Boston. Like a sneak peek into the future..the house is oddly quiet…lots less humming and outbursts of song…less laundry especially towels…but his little brother and roommate – Cooper, is not entirely unhappy having A BEDROOM to himself for the FIRST TIME in his life!
Cooper wanted to do the compete room makeover but I suggested that might make Tate feel a little sad just yet…PERHAPS WE SHOULD WAIT UNTIL HE MOVES INTO HIS DORM BEFORE WE CLEAR HIM OUT….so the OVERALL makeover will take place this Fall. We agreed that changing the wall color would be a GREAT first step in lightening up the space and so…with Phoebe also away this week at camp…I am going to paint the boys room!
Coop wants “LIGHT GRAY”….
HE HAS NARROWED IT DOWN TO FOUR (ALL BENJAMIN MOORE:
PAPER WHITE
WICKHAM GRAY
MISTY GRAY
AND HORIZON
YOU MAY HAVE HEARD RUMBLINGS THAT “GRAY IS ON THE WAY OUT”…Here is what I say to that….”PUuhhhhhHLEASE!!!!!”
NOT TO WORRY, those suggestions come from deep within the design world where color changes MUST happen to keep things fresh…and quite often changes happen THERE years and years before they do in the real world… Maria Killam, my COLOR GURU explained IN HER ARTICLE “GRAY IS OUT” like this:
“……..there has always been and will always be a colour trend of some kind. And as long as there are trends, there will be people eager to be the first to declare them in or out.
The real scoop is that we’re currently in the middle of a 10-year neutral trend cycle with grey. Before grey, we were all about brown, and before that, maybe you remember sage green.”
she continues….”The reason grey is trendy right now is that it provides a crisp backdrop to the bold, clean and colourful hues we’re all decorating with now. The media focuses on grey and whether it’s in or out, but the real news is that bright and happy colour is here to stay. Those happy colours need grey as a backdrop because the beiges we were using as part of the brown trend generally die when combined with clean colors.”
I LOVE YOU MARIA!!!!
SHE HAS THIS COLOUR (I am being all Canadian in honor of Maria) THING DOWN TO A SCIENCE AND I LOVE SCIENCE!
In addition…I personally think a good strong neutral can stand the test of time and TRENDS….choose wisely…I tend to steer toward LIGHTER classic colors, ones with less color to clash. Right now I am obsessed with very light colors…neutrals which enable me to cover the walls with my colorful artwork!!!
NEXT WEEK – WE WILL SEE WHAT GREAT GRAY COOPER CHOSE!!!
Thanks for the link love 😉

Hi Lesli
I love your blog and find it very inspiring. I am in the process of redoing our master bath and was wondering if you could share a little more detail about the galvanized pendant light in your kids’ bathroom. I have already put in the galvanized barn lights from Lowes and they are fabulous! I never would have thought to use outdoor lighting inside but they are perfect! I’ve been trying to come up with a solution to our flush mount and I think this one will work well. Thanks for all of the wonderful ideas I have learned from you. I look forward to seeing your boys’ room makeover! Love the gray!
THANKS so much for stopping by! Go to Barnlightelectric.com

Poke around the site…MANY of their fixtures come in galvanized finish so you should find exactly what you need! xo
Love the color of the stair rails. Is that stain or a particular paint color? Thanks!
Hi Lewellyn, I saw this post too, and had the same question as you. But then I realized all the prior posts are from 2015. Did you end up finding out anything or using a paint or stain? I’m in the midst of my stairway project too, and would welcome anyone else’s ideas or experiences. Good luck with your project as well. Laurie
