Maps, especially the large vintage school maps or murals that cover huge spances of wall…are a GENIUS decorating move. They bring, in one fell swoop…CREATIVITY, COLOR, WHIMSY, INTELLIGENCE (I mean you must know where all those places are-right?)….and a sense of WORLDLINESS to your space.
Old maps can bring immediately a vintage charm, a sense of history into an otherwise new space…giving depth and character to your decor….
MAPS ALSO GIVE YOU, THE DECORATOR…A JUMPING OFF POINT…A PLACE TO START…AND QUITE OFTEN, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED….AND THEN YOU ARE OFF…….
I THINK MAPS LOOK GOOD IN ANY ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE….THE KIDS ROOM ….TO THE DINING ROOM…I CHALLENGE YOU TO TELL ME WHERE THEY WOULD NOT ADD COLOR AND CHARM….? WELL????
They can be functional too…like this one below that claims to hide a television…
…or this one that gives you a place to sit your tired self down…
…and these which give dimension and maybe even cover up walls that the landlord said you “COULD NOT PAINT!” – HA! You showed Mr Roper!!!!- for you kids- the landlord!
…learn while you scrub a dub dub…kids LOVE these…so do adults!
…show off your collections with a pop of color to tie it all together…..LOVE this blue!
Recently I have seen maps used as window shades…GENIUS!
…and they are being transformed into amazing things like lampshades like this one that I HAVE TO HAVE on etsy…seriously check this stuff out….this seller has made some amazing lampshades…I think I will do a future post on JUST these lampshades!
…or how about these lamp shades made from globes…okay..this is seriously creative!
…Maps can tell a story…like all the places you have been together…the MAP of your life together…
…and they can set the BAR HIGH…all the places you dream of going with the kids when they get bigger…
…you can give them a place to put there dreams….
…or a destination to take that train…..
Whoops! How did that get in there!
I LOVE maps…I found one this summer for the boys room…
and it gives me lots of color to play with…
Old maps can still be found for a song in the back rooms of vintage shops…though I have found the increase in their use as DECOR causing the price to go up a bit…but there are still deals to be had but even at the higher prices…I think they earn their keep…
Do you have any maps in your home?
TOMORROW IS GIVEAWAY #2 IN THIS MONTH OF OCTOBER – MY OLD COUNTRY HOUSE
GIVEAWAY MONTH!
one last thing…not about maps but that I feel compelled to say. I LOVE blogging and I love beautiful photographs…eye candy…I get so much of my inspiration from the photos I find online…especially on blogs and on pinterest. BUt lately, I am finding fewer and fewer of the photos I use are taking me back to legitimate links…many go to bogus spam sites and quite often they are linked to nothing at all.
Please, if you use ANY photos from my site, or any other site for that matter…link those photos back to the site of origin… If they belong to someone else, please make sure that credit is given where it is due and PLEASE if one of the photos I have used – but had to link back to pinterest because there was NO link, are YOURS – please let me know so I can credit you…thats all…nuff said.
except…
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BIG BROTHER REVE!!!
You can read more about my wonderful brother Reve here!
Hi Lesli— You really hit my sweet spot with this post on maps! I have loved them for years, and amassed a large collection of vintage maps I use to create unique and personal furniture pieces. (To see some great examples, find me on facebook as Originally Yours, and look at my album titled “map projects”.) Thanks for all of your inspiring ideas— I love following your projects and enjoyed the article in Family Circle this month!
Thanks for sharing all this mappy goodness! I love maps and have some that I have been waiting to use, so these photos give me some good ideas.
Oh my goodness, I love maps too! That first photo has nearly made me paint my dining table that colour so many times. One day, one day…. I just LOVE that photo too. Oh, so much eye candy. I am going to have to leave this post on my computer for awhile so I can peruse them all slowly.
The last time I traveled through Europe I kept buying historic maps of the areas as a souvenier. Now I have these beautiful touristy maps that I love but I can’t figure out how to display them. I hang them up and then take them down because they are such small print, they seem the wrong scale for every wall. Maybe if I try bigger frames and hang them in a group? Or I will just decoupage them onto a table or something because I love that map chair!
I love maps too! Have you ever seen these watercolor maps? http://maps.stamen.com/watercolor/#12/37.7706/-122.3782
I was with my mom and family this weekend as we went to Salina to see my nephews babies. I bought the FC magazine so Lois could see your article. She was very impressed and made me promise to tell you!
xoxoxox
Ah Laura, Thanks for telling me so. It is the next best thing to my own Mom seeing it! xoxoxo Good to hear from you! Nephews…babies…wow!
I love maps and how they make me imagine trips I might take one day. I also love your pink lamps in the last photo!
All best,
Phyllis
